At a Wednesday stockholders meeting the Mid-Brazos Co-Operative Oil Mill drafts were returned pending developments and the mill will not operate this year. Delegates from Navasota pursue industry, while a strong summer recreation program grows with swimming, Little League, and golf at nearby clubs.
More than 150 area golfers from Navasota Brenham Hempstead Bellville Bryan and Madisonville are expected to register for the first annual July 4th golf tournament at August Horst Country Club. O Dan Carter heads the Navasota Golf Association with Henry Walters as a top local contender. Prizes include a MacGregor golf bag Bulls Eye putter and leather set for each flight.
The Grimes County Chamber of Commerce reports merchants will observe Independence Day as an official holiday on Wednesday July 4. Local stores will close in line with the holiday schedule set by the retail merchants committee.
The Mid-South Electric Co-Operative Association will open its new quarters to members and the public on Friday July 6 in conjunction with its annual meeting at Brule Stadium in Navasota. Two directors will be elected to the seven member board at the meeting. Plans to modernize the building began last October after the purchase from Ira Floyd. The redesign features a glass brick facade, terrazzo floors, pine paneled walls, acoustic tile ceilings, and a 15 ton air conditioning system. Interior renovations include a spacious lobby, cashier desk, directors room, and offices for the manager, lineman, and meter testing.
Lutheran laymen from Anderson White Hall Navasota William Penn Bryan Brenham met at Washington State Park on Sunday June 24 to organize a Bluebonnet Zone affiliated with the National Lutheran Layman’s League. Jack Barstow of Houston welcomed the new zone into the Lone Star district.
Nav asota Boy Scouts will start swimming lessons next week at the Navasota pool led by Scoutmaster RK Patout HT. About 10 boys from troop 361 are expected to enroll. All Scouts are invited to attend except July 4, with emphasis on safety and strokes used in meets. Lifeguard and swimming merit badge work offered with tests only for merit badge candidates.
A meeting at the courthouse in Anderson Monday night July 2 at 8 o clock will explain the Soil Bank Program. County Agent Henry Walters said the session aims to inform cotton and peanut growers so they can decide whether to participate, and the public is urged to attend.
Grimes county farmers may obtain a refund of the federal excise tax on gasoline used for farming by filing a claim between June 30 and October 1, 1956. Claims at 2 cents per gallon on Form 2240 go to the district Internal Revenue Director. Initial refunds cover first six months of 1956 and may include gasoline used by a farmer for farming or by a custom operator or neighbor in soil cultivation or crop harvesting. Maintain records for IRS verification.

Gaylord Construction holds the contract for repaving from the Santa Fe tracks to the east city entrance. Widening plans for highway 90 from Santa Fe tracks to the city limits await city bond sale.
About 50 to 75 members of the National Council of Catholic Women in the Navaota district will meet Sunday July 1 at 2 30 pm at the August Horst Country Club. The event was announced by Mrs A Estes district president.
