The 18th annual Grimes County Youth live stock auction at the American Legion Fairgrounds in Anderson raised $9,606.60. Seven calves weighing 4,504 pounds sold for $3,555.24, about 79 cents per pound.
Sunday brought heartbreak for many residents and former pupils who recall Miss Bess Johnson as a beloved first grade teacher in Navasota Public Schools. At 77 she remained active and pictured patriotically, with a niece recalling her loyalty to God and country as family mourns. The report notes she was seen placing a flag holder on her porch before hospital admission.
Miss Bess Johnson 77 of 902 East Washington Avenue died after a head on collision at Cow Talk Steak House on east Highway 90 at 12 20 p m. In the same crash Mrs R A Johnson survived with injuries. The driver of the other vehicle Benny Jewel Sneed 717 Washington Ave Navasota along with two others escaped with minor injuries. Funeral services for Frances Elizabeth Johnson were held at First United Methodist Church with burial in Oakland Cemetery.
Arson charges were filed Saturday against Ora Lee Warren of south Church Street Navasota after a fire Wednesday June 17 destroyed Prince Nixon’s home on Church Street. Warren was arrested at the Arthur Ward place near the Tru-Weld Plant and is jailed in Anderson with a $1000 bond. Evidence included six sealed coffee cans of char and two rolls of film from the scene. Fingerprints were taken from a kerosene container.
J S Waldman owner of Sorrell Manufacturing Company of Houston buys the D Y Gorman building and five acres at Navasota Industrial Park to establish an upholstery furniture plant. The project, aided by the Navasota Industrial Foundation and Chamber of Commerce, plans a 20 000 square foot addition and will train local workers while relocating key personnel from Houston.
Navasota High School senior Lynn Harris won the Texas state title at Hallettsville, judged by twelve experts on horsemanship, personality, and appearance. She will represent Texas in Fargo, North Dakota, later this July in cutting horse and barrel racing events, reign until June 1971, and receive a gold and silver buckle, boots, and a hat.
Bedias hosts a weekend homecoming with a 2 PM Saturday parade and a 7 PM coronation of the homecoming queen. Barbecue lunches will be sold at the Bedias Civic Center with cash prizes of 25, 15 and 10 for best float wagon or old car. Parade entries are invited via Mrs. Bob Black, Bedias P O Box 741 or 395 4277. BILL HEROD takes oath as new member of Navasota City Commission administered by Judge Dolly Boone.
City announces a complete copy of the proposed budget for 1070-71. The annual hearing is set for Monday July 13 at 5 p.m. in City Hall. The total budget is 590,450, up 532,300 from last year, driven mainly by a new sales tax. Revenue from the tax is projected at 70,000 for the new year, with 50 percent to streets, 40 percent to General Fund slack, and 10 percent to industrial development and miscellaneous items.
