Death and Water Improvements Do Not Reconcile in Navasota
A Fort Worth truck driver died when his semi collided with an oak four miles north of Navasota on State Highway 6. In city business, Navasota commissioners approved purchasing an 1150 gallons per minute pump and 75 horsepower motor from Falkenburg Drilling for 4613.75 to support a new water well in the Industrial Foundation tract. They also authorized buying 3600 feet of 12 inch transite pipe from Johns Manville at 3.22 per foot to connect the new well to the current system and a future storage tank and filtration plant were announced for the site. The new well recently tested at 1100 to 1200 gallons per minute. Brewer’s body was identified after fire crews extinguished gasoline-fed flames. The wreck occurred about three miles inside Brazos County. the cause is under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol.

Madden ordained priest at St Paul Episcopal Church Navasota
The Rev Allan Robert Madden will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests at 7 p.m. Friday at St Paul Episcopal Church in Navasota by Rt Rev F Percy Goddard suffragan bishop of the Diocese of Texas. He is the son of Mrs Hugh L Madden and the late Hugh L Madden of Texas City. A 1943 Texas City Central High School graduate, he earned a BA from Baylor University in 1951 and a BD from the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in 1963. A contract for 8.7 miles of construction on State Highway 30 in Grimes County was awarded to Bellville firm E. H. Winn with a low bid of 118,918.51. The project from State Highway 90 at Roans Prairie to the Walker County line includes grading, structures, foundation course and one course surface treatment. Expected duration is 80 working days. Grimes County’s annual watermelon harvest shifts into high gear at 250 acre H and S Farms near Retreat. Co owners Ben Swank and Rayburn Harrington say cutting and loading continue through August with second cuts smaller. Melons average 26 pounds and head to northern and midwestern markets while others go to California. Wholesale price runs about two cents a pound. Acreage rises to 600 to 700 acres this year from last season 300 to 350. County Agent Henry Walters notes more small producers. Swank announces an opening of the first ice cold melon stand on south Highway 6 with shade tables for shoppers, offering single slices or carloads.

Grimes Grain Sorghum Support Rates Announced
Grimes County announces 1964 grain sorghum price supports at 2.05 dollars per hundredweight for No. 2 grade or better. ASC officials note national support unchanged from 1963 at 2.00, with details on loan rates and payment-in-kind. Growers must divert at least 20 percent of total grain sorghum, barley, or corn acreage to qualify for the program.
