Grimes County melon growers prepare a large 1000 acre crop of Charleston Gray black diamonds and Garrisonians for shipment to chain stores and roadside stands nationwide. Harvest begins Thursday at Frank Imhoff Sons near Plantersville with expected 2 cents a pound for 1965 melons. major growers include H & Farms Ben Swank and Rayburn Harrington and others like Robert Keyser Archie Wetuski Tony Wetuski and John Smith. By July 4 plenty by carload or slice.

Highway projects eyed for Grimes County by state
In a chamber session with district highway engineer C B Thames, Grimes County’s three state projects were outlined. The priority follows the Highway 6 loop around Navasota, then widening 105 to the Montgomery County line, and widening 90 from Anderson to Ravens Prairie. Right of way purchases are needed. the state covers half, with the remainder funded by the county and city where applicable. A bond issue may be required beyond the current 60,000 for right of way. Bedias Homecoming Weekend Draws Crowds and Rider Parade
Bedias in Grimes County prepares for a two day homecoming with a trail ride from Madisonville at 9 a.m. followed by concessions and a parade at 2:30 p.m. The event features trail riders led by John Earl Tadlock and Ted Laws, a vast variety show at Hooper Park, and crowning of a homecoming queen. Local bands, floats, and the Prison Band will perform as residents tour old homesteads and cemeteries and mingle with visitors.

Charges Filed After Liquor Raid Near Shiro
A 55 year old Grimes County man Justine Holiday was charged with two counts of possession of alcohol for sale after a raid 4% miles north of Shiro by Sheriff Dick Johnson and deputies. Officers seized 12 fifths of wine five half pints of liquor five half pints of vodka two half pints of gin 24 beers and 31 beer bottles 23 fifths of wine three half pints of liquor and one pint of gin at Holiday’s home. Holiday posted a $1000 bond and was released from Grimes County jail in Anderson.

Food and cigarettes vanish in Shiro cafe burglary
Grimes County deputies investigate a Sunday night break in at Shiro Cafe in Shiro. Manager Mrs Brosig Pavlock reported the theft when opening Monday, with six cartons of cigarettes ten pounds of sugar two pounds of sliced ham and a three pound picnic ham taken. Entry was by cutting a screen at a side window. No suspects named by Sheriff Dick Johnson.

The Navasota Independent School District board unanimously chose 35 year old Gerry M Peoples of Joshua as Navasota High School principal. Peoples, a 1954 Southwest Texas State College education graduate with a 1964 masters from Stephen F Austin College, comes from Joshua where he previously led as principal of the Class A school and has coached at Tomball Coneley and Quitman. He succeeds J D Chaney who became superintendent of Avalon ISD near Waxahachie.

Funeral services were held for 72 year old Navasota gro cer merchant Ben Silverstein at Levy Memorial Chapel Houston with Rabbi Marshall Berg officiating. Interment followed at Adath Israel Cemetery Houston. Silverstein died June 18 at the West Washington Avenue store where he worked 49 years.
