Centennial preparations surge in Navasota with bumper cards, placards, and water sign displays for the 8th annual Watermelon Festival and centennial. Promotions include TV appearances, a citywide cleanup push, and plans for a large souvenir edition. Local figures Don Barrett and Lions delegates highlighted upcoming events en route to celebration.
Governor Allan Shivers will speak Monday July 5 at 10 a.m. at the corner of Washington avenue and Farquhar street for Navajo’s Centennial Celebration and the 8th annual Watermelon Festival. He will join the Centennial parade at 10 45 a.m. and depart after lunch for Temple. Correspondents are urged to obtain copies early due to the Centennial Edition.
The first carload of Grimes County watermelons was shipped from Plantersville last Thursday by J. P. Smith. By Wednesday afternoon 28 cars and 12 truck loads had left Nava sota shed for A P Company. Opening price 1.40 and rain Florida Georgia shipments affect pricing. Cardboard box supports aim to prevent melon shifting in transit. Shippers include Waller residents W. W. Bunting and Lloyd Bunting, plus Harrington Fuqua and others from Plantersville.
Navasota High School reduces vocational agriculture staff to one teacher under February policy by state education commissioner Dr J W Edgar. Bill Survant is released, leaving H O Henderson as the agriculture teacher. Homemaking also short of vacancy and staffing remains.
In a congregational meeting last Sunday the First Presbyterian Church elected Rev. Charles Merrill Proudfoot as pastor to succeed Rev. Edwin Walthall who resigned for Morriston Arkansas. Proudfoot, finishing a PhD, will begin October 1 and has taught Greek at the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin. He is a native of Oceola Iowa and earned degrees from Texas Western College Austin College Austin Seminary Yale Divinity School and UT. This will be his first pastorate. Dr J W Ousley Baylor University will fill in at First Baptist Church Sunday June 27 while Rev Tom Drewett attends Normangee revival.
Fred Voelter service manager at the Navasota Auto Company was credited with saving Lawrence Kolby a line mechanic after a welding spark ignited a gasoline pan Kolby burned in the left leg Kolby rested at Brazos Valley Sanitarium and Voelter suffered minor burns from his quick intervention.
A half mile speed zone is set for the detour at the Navasota river bridge on highway 6 north of the city. The limit entering the zone is 45 mph and 30 mph on detour approaches. Austin Bridge Company will close the highway Monday and motorists begin using the detour then. The detour will operate about four months under a $93,000 widening contract for the bridge by Austin Bridge Company.
Frank Falco agent for H&NT motor freight lines had a shoe ripped off by an electric rotary lawn mower at his home last Friday around 6 p.m. He sustained a painful but nonserious foot cut, soon after returning from Little League Pirates practice.
Harold Dreyfuss installed Navasota Lions Club officers at the annual ladies night program at Colonial Cafe. Elmore Gibbs was named 1954 55 president with Curtis Maynard and others taking key posts. two new directors were added and special awards given including the R W Barry baseball award to Anthony Liece for a .404 season batting average and team leadership.
A Waddell, store manager here since 1949 for J C Penney, is named manager of the Penney Store at Bay City and will report Monday morning. Mrs. Waddell and Frances will remain here until housing is found. Waddell began as a clerk in Corpus Christi in 1935, moved to Brownsville in 1940 as assistant manager, and in 1949 came here as manager. He serves on the Navasota school board, as Grimes County Chamber of Commerce director, and is a former director of the Navasota Kiwanis Club. The couple plans to sell their 110 Victoria street home.
Ralph Yarborough former assistant attorney general district judge and state board of legal examiners will speak Friday June 25 at 4 45 p m on Washington avenue in support of his candidacy for Texas governor He says he will present facts about the evils of our insurance laws the danger of a third term stacked state boards and other issues of interest to the people of the state.
W. D. Stuckey, 29, of Iola, has been employed as a policeman for the City of Navasota. A Grimes County native, he served in the Merchant Marine 1944 to 1946 and in the army 1946 to 1947, was a road grader operator for Grimes County Precinct No. 1, is married with two children, and belongs to the Methodist Church and Mason Lodge. He succeeds L. T. Causey, who resigned.

City Manager M. B. Thomas issued a final warning to dog owners who have not vaccinated their dogs or paid the city tax reduced to 1.00 per dog. Dr. R. F. Chappell will vaccinate at his home before 8 am and after 5 pm. The tax may be paid at the city office between 8 am and 5 pm. The dog catcher will soon round up untagged dogs, placing them in the city pound for owner retrieval within 48 hours.

Forty Navasotians will travel to Houston to appear on the Darts for Dough program on KPRC TV in support of the Navasota Centennial Celebration July 3 to 5. The Grimes County Chamber of Commerce sponsors the trip. Three contestants will be chosen from the group for the half hour show, then the party will dine at Grades Restaurant.
The Navasota Examiner-Review earned third in the Texas Press Association news picture contest for weeklies in towns over 2,500. Award presented to Bob Whitten, managing editor and co-owner, at the Fort Worth meeting. Credit goes to Peggy Kidd who shoots and develops the pictures in a shop dark room.
The Navasota City Commission at a called meeting voted to raise the accident insurance for volunteer firemen from 3000 to 5000 and renewed the policy with the William Albert Miller Agency. The panel also authorized the city manager to sign deeds to Oakland Cemetery lots and approved John Stone’s taxi service plan using two 1954 Studebakers and one 1953 Studebaker, stationed near Lake's Drive-In.
The Navasota Golf Association will sponsor a 36 hole tournament during the Navasota Centennial Celebration from July 3 to 5. Club president L. T. Sylvest announced an entry fee of $2.00, with 18 holes to qualify. The course is described as in top condition and a large turnout is expected from nearby cities.
Rev A H Beardsley and Paul Mercer delivered magazines to Mac Claskey Veterans Hospital at Temple on Wednesday, sharing reading material with veterans and staff.
