A four hour Kiwanis Radio Auction ended at 7 30 Saturday night with merchandise totaling 1408 70 dollars sold to the highest bidders Auctioneer Wm Albert Miller kept the bidding lively with remarks about the strong turnout and generous support from attendees.
The first Kiwanis Radio Auction credits a three man committee Bertrand Hansen Wm Albert Miller and C K Pirtle with planning and execution The event raised funds for a scholarship for a Navasota High School grad and supported the Grimes County Library Construction plans and a new V F W Home A long list of items sold for varied sums totaled 79 8 percent of retail value Reflecting on the community effort the piece notes several local entities and individual donors and mentions a Seattle postcard update and a homegrown apple anecdote
City official Gene Sanders owner of Lack's Associate Store received a telegram from Richard E. Trappe Friedrich Refrigerators Inc congratulating him on second place in the Friedrich dealer sales drawing He will receive a 100 dollar U S savings bond as prize for his achievement.
Navasota City Commission rejected all bids as too high for the new pool and kept two low bids from Bryan firms for review. The board approved a 50 year VFW post lease on Augusta Horst property for 25 a year to support a 20000 home, and moved funds to Grimes County Library and Golf Association while planning sewer work and cost reductions. Delinquent 30 day utility accounts will be cut off. May or Gibson absent, Moore presiding.
Alfred and Luther Schwettman announce Gulf Coast Feed Center at 318 McAlpine street will stock bulk Sweetheart Milk A Day Dairy Pellets from Gulf Coast Federated Feed Association of Houston. The center is first distributor in the area and added bulk storage and a dedicated feed truck for delivery.
Junior and senior life guard classes start Monday at 9 a.m. at the municipal pool. Registration opens at 9 a.m. with regular classes to follow. The six day course runs through Saturday July 1, announced by Director Mrs. Robert A. Harris.
Katherine Bass aged 73 of 2802 Smith Houston was killed in a three car crash on State Highway 6 eight miles south of Navasota at 4:30 pm Sunday June 18 in misting rain. Roy Scales also of Houston was badly injured and the Scales car struck a northbound 1957 Chevrolet station wagon driven by Domingo Catetillo of Waco. Catetillo and his wife were injured. Catetillo’s children had minor bruises. A third car driven by Earley Heddins of Brazoria left the road.
A nine year old from Navasota sealed a note in a bottle and cast it into the Brazos River during floods in April 1957. Four years and two months later a Sealy boy found the bottle and replied, asking to be pen pals. Dorothy Sledge and Allen Jozwiak exchanged letters via river mail.
Judge Max M. Rogers of Huntsville presided in district court at Anderson this week and sentenced three men to the state penitentiary while placing two on probation. Lenny Brown, 39, of Houston received 12 years for armed robbery of Burns Sinclair Service Station on June 2, 1960. Douglas Wesley, 45, of NavaSota got ten years probation as an accomplice in the same robbery. Henry Hughey, 36, of NavaSota and Robert Irvin Prince, 31, of Houston each drew two-year penal terms for stealing a saddle from Melvin Hughey of Navasota, arrested April 17. Gene Morris, 19, of Anderson was placed on two-year probation for the February 6, 1961 burglary of Gene Schaefer's Grocery Store in Anderson.

City officials convened an all out session to order the collection of delinquent parking meter fines. City Marshal Garvin Wright faces potential arrest orders if fines remain unpaid by the next meeting. Approximately 150 names appear on the delinquent list as officials urge enforcement.
The Library Building Fund drive for a proposed $25,000 Grimes County library stands at $12,283.78. Drive Chairman J. B. Hodge notes only $3,800 since the start, with 14 of 25 volunteers not returning cards. gifts come from memorials, projects, former residents, cash, and pledges totaling the amount.
Ten days of heavy rain brought 9.46 inches to Navasota area, prompting U S Weather Bureau officials to urge stockmen to move cattle from low riverbank zones from Valley Junction to Richmond. Washington State Park shows river levels rising toward a crest near 42 feet with 21.30 inches measured Monday morning and 28.12 Tuesday morning, while Navasota total rainfall reaches 4.56 inches since last Wednesday.
Latham Boone Jr son of Mr and Mrs Latham Boone of Navasota won 40 dollars in the Silver Harvest Day drawing held Saturday at 3 pm in front of KWBC on Railroad Street. About 1000 people attended the event and Boone drew a tag worth ten percent of the 400 dollar pot. Tickets are available at participating Navasota merchants with no obligation.
Navasota Volunteer Fire Department awarded a 30000 dollar contract to Woodrow Hamric for a metal baked enamel Firemen's Recreation Hall at Firemen's Park on Manley Street. Ground broken for a concrete slab, but rain halted work. Building planned 80 by 120 feet with two rooms a large recreation hall and two rest rooms.
