Defendants sentenced in 12th District Court
Four defendants pled guilty and received sentences from Judge Tate McCain of Palestine in 12th Judicial District Court. Jim Bill Barron got seven years probation for attempted rape. John Billy Phillips received seven years in the State Department of Correction after a pistol slaying trial. Walter Ray Banks earned five years probation for theft. Robert Earl Neal drew three years probation for possession of stolen property. Court proceedings continued, with no official results available yet.

Gunfire damages Red Star Grocery burglary attempt
Grimes County deputies investigate an attempted burglary at Red Star Grocery on Farm Road 1774 between Plantersville and Anderson. A watchdog was shot, a plate glass window shattered, and the front door blasted by bullets from a small caliber rifle or pistol and a shotgun. No entry occurred and owner Tommy Floyd does not live at the store. No arrests yet.

Burglars Hit Richards Post Office Saturday Night
Post office at Richards was ransacked and a money order machine stolen during a Saturday night break in. The crime was reported Sunday by Postmistress Mrs. Gatsey Harmon. Postal Inspector J. R. Bruington of Houston aids the ongoing investigation. entry gained by breaking out a rear south side window. No arrests have been made.

Subject Arrested in Grimes County for Cattle Theft
Grimes County deputies arrest Ervin Bookman named in a complaint charging cattle theft. Sheriff John Darby identified the suspect as Ervin Bookman, a Black male, who was arrested Wednesday of last week by Deputy Bubba Love. Bookman received a magistrate's warning from Justice of the Peace Bobby Wickey.

Three Men Charged in Navasota Theft Case
Three suspects described as who fit the Navasota bank theft description were reported in Bellville custody after a June 6 theft of 10000 from a Navasota man. Robert Taylor Howard Smith Hackett and Wesley Armstrong face theft by false pretext charges filed in Justice court.

Grimes County OKs Aerial Mirex Spraying For Fire Ants
At a special Monday session the Grimes County Commissioners Court voted unanimously to approve aerial application of Mirex to control imported fire ants. The resolution asks the Texas Commissioner of Agriculture to expedite approval and urges cooperation with neighboring counties to create a buffer zone and protect the county’s agriculture based economy.
