By a 6 to 1 margin Navasota voters approved a 190000 bond for a new city hall fire station library highway widening on 90 and a street maintainer. Mayor H N Sandall said it will take about nine months before occupancy after demolition and clearing of the old building lot at the corner.
City voters approve 190000 bond issues for a new city hall fire station and library, widen state highway 90, and buy street equipment. Canvassing shows 347 55 for city hall bonds 374 25 for street improvements 368 28 for equipment. Construction to start mid September with Hedrick architect drawings.
Wm. Albert Miller was designated to head the Farrow Plan financial campaign at the First Methodist Church of Navasota. The drive will be launched Wednesday, June 27.
Early Monday a lost seeming plane circled the water tower seeking town name. Citizens suggest painting large city names on buildings for air navigation and note local chambers face staffing cuts. County rainfall aids crops though flea hoppers and boll weevils bite corn and cotton. Efforts to form a Navasota Army Reserve unit aim to train local youths at home with pay.
New officers of the Navasota Lions Club were introduced at the Selman home during a chicken barbecue. Immediate past president Hulon C. Hall outlined club growth since 1948 and cited projects including a $500 scholarship, sight conservation, dam distribution for the blind, the Lions Minstrel and support for the Kerrville Crippled Children's Camp.
The Navasota Golf Association announces its first annual July 4 tournament at August Horst Country Club a nine hole grass green course. About 150 entrants expected with prizes over 250 dollars and a 3 dollar entry fee. Play starts 8 a.m. with handicapped flighted scores and on course refreshments.
Final plans for a cooperative oil mill at Navasota hinge on the combined board of directors of five cooperative groups in the El Campo area meeting Thursday night. June 21, Huron Hall announced today. Once the meeting outcome is known Hall will call all stockholders to a meeting to inform them of the situation.
The Mid-South Electric Co-Operative Association will hold its annual meeting and open house at Brule Stadium on North La Salle Street. President J T Gibson announced the event for Friday July 6 at 8 p.m with a 7 p.m House of Magic show sponsored by General Electric. About 2500 people expected from Grimes Madison Montgomery Walker and Brazos counties.
An election of officers at the J. Willie Leigh American Legion Post No. 152 was held on June 14 at the American Legion Hall on Torth street. New officers elected include C. J. Leathert as commander Richard Goodman vice commander Mike Torres second vice commander Eddie Dobjanski st at arms Richard Dean adjutant E Jackson finance officer Rev A H Beardsley chaplain Henry S Wesson historian and Neal Stacey service officer. They will be installed on July 13.
Mrs. W. H. Journeay directs Grimes County Red Cross swimming with about 235 children. Four beginner and intermediate classes meet daily at the municipal pool, teaching 15 hours over two weeks. Helpers include Robert Harris Bob Hall Mary Jack Whitaker Pat Patout Bobby Brewton and Bill Patout.
J C Crutchfield of the Grimes County ASC said committee members have met all week and will publish early next week a list of benefits for Grimes County farmers. Applications for aid may be submitted once the announcement is made, with actual benefits not realized until next year.
Rayburn Harrington and Daryl Fuqua through the Navasota Watermelon Growers Association sold 35,000 pounds of black diamond watermelons to L. W. Hansen of Willmar Minnesota for 2.25 per hundred weight. Melons averaged 38 pounds and eight bobtail loads were sold in Houston last week. Rail shipments begin as the season peaks June 28. The yield is short due to dry weather but quality is above average. Five carloads shipped from Franklin Monday.
Gilbert Spring is scheduled to speak this Saturday at 10 30 in the morning at a local venue. The event invites community members to hear the speaker discuss topics of regional interest.

Edward G Hodges leads as commander designate. Battery C, 343rd Field Artillery Battalion from Houston will relocate to Navasota and join Texas Own 90th Division as Battery B 807th during September.
