230 Register Monday For Swimming Lessons
A total of 230 children enrolled for the third annual American Red Cross swimming classes at the municipal pool Monday morning. Mrs. Harris, Grimes county Red Cross water safety chairman, said sessions run two weeks with Monday to Friday mornings from 9 to 12, split into two 9 to 10 30 and 10 30 to 12 blocks for beginners, intermediates, and a swimmers class. Instructors include Mrs. Journeau, Mrs. Weaver, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Frede, and Bob Hall, with assistants Mary Jack Whitaker, Bill Patout, Carol Ann Journeau, Louis Poole, and Linda Stoneham. Several mothers aid with paper work.

Kiwanis members witnessed the first tornado ever recorded on movie film from Dallas, a 16mm view shown by Stuart G. Bigler of Texas A and M. The program spurred calls for an active Civil Defense corps in case of catastrophe. In other notes, United Fund budget reviews proceeded with representatives from Red Cross, Hospital charities, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Heart Association, and Gonzales Warm Springs Foundation. Roy Moore, a Southern Methodist freshman, arrived in England for a Europe tour aboard the Queen Elizabeth. Mrs. Vastine Hughes, visiting Kiwanis speaker from England, contrasted child literacy and discipline in England with the United States.

St Patrick's 3 Week School Ends Friday
The third and final week of summer Christian Doctrine classes at St Patrick's Catholic Church concludes Friday. Leaders Larry Connnelly and Richard Bielamowicz of St Mary's Seminary Houston teach older students, assisted by Mrs. Robert Yarbrough for the junior class and Mrs. Lou Hertenberger for the youngest preparing for First Holy Communion. Forty-one students registered and attendance has been excellent.

Four Navasota Scouts will join a Sam Houston Area Council contingent of 400 for the Fourth National Boy Scout Jamboree at Valley Forge Pa July 12 18 The group includes Bill Hertenberger Jimmy Swanson John Robertson and Robert Yarbrough with a 1500 acre camp city and a $300 fee covering food equipment camp and transport.

Grimes County Farmers to Receive Soil Bank Checks
About 36 Grimes county farmers will receive 177 500 in payments under the 1957 Soil Bank Acreage Reserve Program. The 3 840 8 acres in the county have been placed in the Soil Bank and checks are being mailed from the U S C office. Payments cover the reduction of cotton planting acreage under the program and require weed control and no harvesting grazing or use of the land until future provisions.

Special Meeting On Cotton Market In Central Texas
County Agent Henry Walters announced a special meeting for all interested in the total cotton market at Gulf States auditorium on Tuesday night June 25 at 8 p.m. The session follows a regional Waco meeting noting the total market could dwindle to 5 million or grow to 16 million bales in 4 to 5 years. Watermelon Crop Two Weeks Late Due to Rain
The Nava sota Watermelon Growers' Association says heavy spring rains push the watermelon harvest about two weeks late. Acreage mirrors last year. first melons were June 20 last year, so market movement starts after July. John McCaskill is association president. Major growers are Robert Harris and Rayburn Harrington.

City Commission appoints Board of Equalization
The Navasota City Commission named Pierce Cochran Joel Terrell and Jim McDonald to the Board of Equalization for the coming year at Friday afternoon’s meeting. The Brown Swiss Cattle Association met at Ernest Isbell’s Bedias farm on Friday June 14 for an all day event featuring a cattle show judged by Martin Fulcher of Texas Tech. Senior and junior division champions were named for males and females with Pat Isbell, Sharon Garrett, and Ernest Isbell among top exhibitors.
