Music was his life Services Held for Henry Wesson

Henry S. Wesson 67 designer and installer of the Alfred University carillon and pipe organs at First Presbyterian and First Baptist Churches in Navasota died Friday at 11 45 am. He lived at 306 Duke Street and died in the Wesson home where he studied as a youth. Born Nov 23 1896 to Ada Schumacher and Walter Blake Wesson he was a WWI veteran. He studied at Gilmont Organ School Syracuse University and the Malines Carillon School and performed before heads of state in Europe. He taught at Chicora College and Ward Belmont and helped with the carillon at the Chicago World's Fair in 1933 and 1934. His wife Ida DeMoss Koen Wesson died in 1955. (Continued on back Page).

Truck Smashes Gas Pump Near Navasota Station

Henry Woodard of Box 96 Navasota escaped injury when his pick up truck ran out of control and struck a gasoline pump at Fisher's Humble Service Station on south La Salle Avenue. Fire started from severed wires but volunteers quickly put out the flames. The pump and truck were heavily damaged.

Kiwanis Auction in Navasota Tops Last Year

Navasota Kiwanis sold $2,268.40 in merchandise for 1,629.30, achieving 72 percent of retail value and beating last year’s proceeds by about 220. The 72 percent net return marks an increase from 68 percent.

Navasotan Awards Savings and Loan Study Certificate

Mrs. Willie Mae Bosse assistant secretary treasurer of the Navasota Federal Savings and Loan Association received a certificate for completing two courses in the 1963 64 school term on savings and loan accountings. Attending were her husband Edward H. Bosse and other local officials. The Brenham Study Club organized in 1962 to teach savings and loan personnel in the area, with attendees from Columbus Brenham Conroe Huntsville College Station Bryan Hearne and Navasota.

Navasota well to add 1200 GPM to system

A 36 hour pumping test at the Navasota Industrial Foundation tract shows a new municipal well capable of delivering 1200 gallons per minute to augment the current supply. Falkenburg Drilling Company reached 300 feet after overcoming a prior shaft setback and a 12 inch pipe and a 1200 GPM pump were approved for bid at a city commission meeting. A 9000 foot transfer to the treatment plant and future ground storage and filtration facilities were outlined.

Plans Completed for Big Song Fest Here June 27

About 2 000 persons are expected to attend a big Song Fest at Fireman's Hall Saturday June 27. Two top quartets will headline a two hour program starting 8 p m. Tickets cost 1 for those over 12, under 12 admitted free. Proceeds benefit the Navasota Volunteer Fire Department with a concession still run by the firemen. The Richards Quartet led by Ira E Haynie and Charles Taliaferro with Ed Keisler and Ebb Corley perform half the show, with Linda Spikes of Kurten at the piano. The Nettle Sisters Mrs Marian Domaine Mrs Gussie McCulloch Mrs John McCulloch and Mrs Ethel Marks round out the program, with Sue Stewart at piano. The public is invited.

Presbyterian Supply Pastors Are Announced

Three supply pastors from the Austin Theological Seminary will fill the pulpit at the First Presbyterian Church of Navasota for the next three Sundays. The Rev. Larry Correu and Mrs. Correu plus Laura will be on vacation. Supply pastor Sunday, June.

Iola Trustees Vote To Retain Present Faculty

In a recent Iola School Board meeting the current faculty was kept under the same terms as the 1963 64 term. Herbert Richards resignation from seventh and eighth grade teaching was accepted as he moves to Rockport with his wife a 1964 graduate of Sam Houston State College to take a position in the elementary school.

C of C Gains 30 New Memberships

The Chamber of Commerce membership drive, led by E. L. Maris, added 30 new members to reach 151. Awards were given to seven workers with a $20 prize shared by Malcolm Robertson and R. A. Patout Jr. and other prizes to Mrs. John F. Scott, Mrs. H. R. Turner, R. M. Love, and N. R. Nichols.

Equalization Board To Meet Monday At School Tax Office

The Equalization Board for the Navasota Independent School District will meet at the school tax office on Monday, June 22, at 10 a.m. to discuss tax problems with railroads, industrial firms, oil companies, pipelines and utilities. On Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. others who have been notified may appear before the board if they wish.

Navasota Golf Group Plans July 4 Tourney

The Navasota Golf Association announced its annual July 4 tournament at August Horst Country Club. The 18 hole blind bogey event offers a medalist prize and top golfers in three flights. Entry is $5 and includes a beef barbecue dinner. extra plates are $1.50.

Fox Hunters Take Spotlight At Game Hearing

Three top Texas Game and Fish Commission officials attended a public hearing in Anderson on proposed game laws. Discussion focused on Grimes County fox hunting rules with local residents urging tighter fox protection and others opposing changes. Topics included fox trapping seasons and opening the deer season earlier, with quail season dates aligned to deer.
