Grimes County Watermelon Growers Meet on 1960 Shipments
About 500 to 600 acres of melons grown by just over a half dozen Grimes County farmers were discussed at a Watermelon Growers Association meeting. Plans set loading points for 1960 shipments at Navasota Stoneham and Plantersville with harvest potential from late June to July 1. The group noted 80 percent of Grimes melons will head to Houston markets, with prices around two and a half cents per pound, and discussed transport costs driving competition from northern states.

Census picks up Navasota Grimes counts and new civic plans

Grimes County announces a 1960 grain sorghum price support rate of 1.78 per hundredweight for grade 2 or better sorghum with up to 13 percent moisture stored in approved facilities. Cutting dies produced for tank ends at Texweld plant
Falcom Weisner, a vertical lathe operator, requires both hands and a foot to craft massive dies used to press tank ends from 14 inch thick metal at Texweld Products Company on a 35 acre site along south Highway 6. Production is slated to begin late this month after a 2000 degree furnace and a second 400 ton press are installed.

USDA report released through Grimes County ASC states basic 1960 cotton support at 171 cents below 1959. Middling one-inch cotton from Choice A allotments set at 32.39 cents per pound countywide, vs 34.10 in 1959. No Choice B growers. B rate 26.60 cents per pound. Purchasing agents will buy Choice A cotton at the support rate.

School Board Seeks More Bids for New High School Structure

City Commission May Call Bond Election Friday
City Commission will likely set the date for a 400000 plus revenue bond election at a called meeting Friday afternoon at 5 o clock. The funds would buy the natural gas distribution system in the city’s name rather than through the non profit corporation. The tentative plan for Friday is to approve or disapprove Saturday, July 9. Also on the agenda is bids on sewerage system improvements with only two bids received last Friday, both above the appropriation.
