Anderson Named NHS Principal in Navasota
William J. Anderson, former Navasota Elementary principal, was named principal of Navasota High School for 1961 62 by the Navasota School Board. He succeeds Sol Everett who will become counselor. The board, led by President George Franks, unanimously approved hiring on the State salary schedule for 12 months. Anderson is a North Texas State College graduate with 12 years in teaching and administration. He has held roles in Dallas high school teaching, Cleburne junior high coaching, and Cleburne elementary principalships.

29 Freight Cars Derailed Near Shiro
About two miles south of Shiro a southbound Burlington Rock Island freight train derailed at 6 45 am Friday. The wreck demolished track and left a small railroad bridge damaged. No injuries were reported. Crews had replaced the right of way by Monday and were still righting overturned cars.

Watermelon Crop Dwindles in Grimes County This Year
Grimes County plans a tiny watermelon season with 250 to 300 acres. Only three growers remain in a former top cash crop area. Melons, mostly Charleston Gray and Black Diamond varieties, were due for shipment between June 25 and July 1, with much of the crop earmarked for Houston markets. High shipping costs and easy growing methods press the industry downward.
