Senators Push Six-Dam Brazos Plan For Texas

Lyndon B. Johnson and Omar Burleson introduce S. 2056 and H. R. 7378 to advance the Brazos River Authority six dam program. A Ferguson Crossing dam near Carlos is prioritized, with federal help sought as state cost support at prevailing government rates. License Fee Boost Will Hike Revenue

Grimes county will gain about $6800 in vehicle registration revenue next year after a 10 percent license fee increase. County tax assessor Guy Davis said the measure, passed by the state legislature, includes state highway right of way cost sharing. County Judge Latham Boone warned the state paying half still leaves heavy debt for Grimes and could divert funds from farm to market roads.

Negro Man Charged With Arson After Monday Blaze

H B Ballinger a Black man was arrested for arson after a 3 am blaze partially destroyed a two room rental house owned by Oscar Robertson opposite George Washington Carver school. He bonded out on 500 dollars after denying statements and giving inconsistent accounts to City Marshal Garvin Wright and Sheriff Dick Johnson.

Navasota Reservists to Attend Summer Camp

About 15 Navasota area reservists begin two weeks of summer field training at Ft. Polk Louisiana starting June 15 as part of the 90th Infantry Division. Lt. Ed Hodges says annual training keeps a ready reserve force for national emergencies and credits local employers for vacation scheduling support. Battery C 343d Field Artillery Battalion plans to depart Saturday morning.

New Sheriff's Radio Installed At County Jail

Sheriff Dick Johnson announced a new two way radio is installed at the sheriff's living quarters in Anderson, funded by Grimes county and the Civil Defense Corps. The 60 watt Motorola base station on a 65 foot pole will operate day and night to bridge the gap between north county units and the police station, reducing long distance telephone costs.

Jimmy Bond Joins Gibson Agency For Summer Months

Jimmy Bond, nephew of W. E. Gibson, has been employed by the W. E. Gibson Agency for the summer months. He plans to join the firm after graduation from A. & M. College next year and completing army service. Bond is taking basic insurance courses at A. & M. College.

United Fund Budget And Admissions Committee Meeting

The budget and admissions committee of the Navasota and Grimes County United Fund will meet Tuesday afternoon June 18 at 1 30 p m in the directors room of The First National Bank of Navasota. Robert E Armstrong chairman announced the purpose is to hear requests from charities seeking participation in the 1957 United Fund.

County Purchases New Motor Grader For Precinct 3

The County Commissioners Court met Monday and awarded Benson Tractor Co. the bid for a new motor grader for Precinct 3 at 13,500. Musking Tractor Co. bid 14,009. The CourtAlso approved insuring the new county jail and sheriff's quarters up to 50,000 upon building acceptance. Insurance agents named: W. E. Gibson, Henry C. Baker, J. K. Thomas, Albert Miller, Jessie Bird.

Manning Named Superintendent of Quitman Schools

Paul Manning will move with his family to Quitman to assume the duties of superintendent of Quitman schools on July 1. He resigns as coordinator of schools in Navasota and was to become high school principal at A and M Consolidated Schools in College Station. Quitman, a class A high school district in Wood county, reports 42 seniors this year and lies in east Texas oil fields. Windell Rice will replace Manning as coordinator of instruction in Navasota, having earlier planned to join La Marque Public Schools before reconsidering.

July 4 Medal Play Tourney Set by Navasota Golf Assn

Q Dan Carter president of the Navasota Golf Association announced this week that the annual 18 hole medal play open tourney will be held on Thursday July 4 at August Horst Country Club. About 150 area golfers expected. Entry fee 3.00 with 300.00 in golf equipment for flight winners. Five flights with specific score groupings and handicapping by Callaway system.

Expected To Register Saturday For Swim Lessons

More than three hundred youngsters are expected to register for Red Cross swimming classes at the municipal pool Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a m. Mrs Betty Harris water safety chairman says the program marks the third year of the Red Cross offering. Children who come alone must have a signed release from a parent or guardian and each pupil must have had their sixth birthday prior to registration. The school runs two weeks starting Monday with separate instructors for beginners intermediates and advanced swimmers and a team of assistant instructors.

Robert Turner Named NavaSota Football Head Coach and AD

Robert Turner, former Sam Houston State quarterback and Little All-American, was chosen as Nava Sota high school's head football coach and athletic director at a School Board meeting. He will also oversee the district’s distributive education program. Turner, 1945 Huntsville high school and 1979 Sam Houston graduate, has coached at Freer since graduation, leading football to finals in 1954, strong seasons, and multiple district titles in basketball. He is married with three children and a Church of Christ member.

Grimes County Scouts To Hold Camporee Here

Grimes County Boy Scouts will attend a district camporee at the Scout hut Friday and Saturday. O. L. Byrd, camping committee chairman, said camps will be set Friday afternoon with registration from 5 to 9 p.m. Scoutmasters George Klett and Rev. Merrill Proudfoot will stay overnight. Saturday features field day of scouting skills with each troop inspecting its camp under Clyde Lee Prestwood, district chairman.

Milburn to Lead St Pauls Church for Three Months

The Rev John G Milburn will fill the pulpit at St Pauls Episcopal Church in NavaSota for the next three months. He arrives after four years in the British West Indies and will be accompanied by his wife and their 12 year old son Peter. He will serve as rector in charge of the church.

Three Navasota Boys Attend Camp Hoblitzelle
