L B Foster Navastat plant near Smely OPICS expands beyond a year old with 18 employees, two shifts, and an in plant training program to support growth. Plant manager Neil McCready notes expansion depends on local training capacity and availability of operators. the long program costs but yields a capable workforce.
The Grimes County Open Youth Horse Show takes place at the American Legion Fair Grounds arena in Anderson with adult classes also offered. Entry fees are 2 per class for contestants and 3 per class for post entries. spectators are admitted free. Judge Melvin Joice of Livingston, approved by the AQHA, oversees events in four age divisions with a wide slate of performance and halter classes and prizes including tack and silver belt buckles for high point winners.
Final preparations are underway for the 18th annual Grimes County Youth Fair to be held Thursday through Saturday June 18 20 at the Anderson American Legion Fairgrounds. The Youth Open Horse Show occurs Saturday at the American Legion arena with events led by Fred W. Schroeder chairing livestock and Charlie Ashorn directing swine. The youth livestock sale is scheduled for 8 30 p.m. Thursday. Activities resume 10 a.m. Friday June 19.
Registration for the annual American Red Cross summer swimming program will be held Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the municipal pool. Eligible are first grade children accompanied by a parent. In charge of the dairy division is Mickey Wichman, while Mrs. E. M. Holt Jr. supervises the girls exhibit hall. Youth Fair plans include field crops competition at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 18, with Sam Duncan chairing that division. The first of two rodeos begins Friday, June 19 at 8:30 p.m., with E. M. Holt Jr. in charge. Four Grimes County youths are named 1970 King and Queen nominees, with Eddie Rabin and others representing Navasota 4-H Club.
Navasota city officials accepted with regret the written resignation of City Manager Charlie L. Carter at a brief regular meeting Monday night. Carter will leave July 1 to take a similar post in Kountze, after five years in Navasota.
Knights of Columbus Council 4054 of Anderson holds its 15th annual celebration on Sunday June 14 at the KC Hall near Anderson on Highway 90. Chicken barbecue with all the trimmings starts at 11 a.m. and games and entertainment fill the afternoon. Randy and the Rockets play a dance from 8 p.m. to midnight. public invited.
Grimes County Commissioners Court voted a ten percent across the board raise for all county officers and employees effective June 1, 1970. Auditor Dan I. Floyd estimates about $1,500 extra per month and $18,000 per year. Unanimous vote. Upcoming actions include redistricting talks for four precincts, appointment of election judges, and hearings on tax assessments. Bill Foster deputized to ride with a Gulf States worker during a strike to help prevent violence. County will acquire all right of way for a project.
Bishop Kenneth Copeland, at the Texas Annual Conference session in Houston, appoints Rev. Louis Knight to First United Methodist Church Nava sota. Knight comes from Fairfield. his family includes wife Doris and three children Roy Letha and Rodney.
Gulf States Utilities and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers say a quick contract deal is unlikely. The strike has idled 2,200 workers across five GSU divisions from Baton Rouge to Navasota, entering its seventh week. About 700 supervisors have kept the company operating since April 24 as daily talks continue with little progress. A union spokesman cites about two dozen issues, four of which are deemed paramount.
Kiwanis Radio Auction total reaches 2647 54 in merchandise to be auctioned Saturday June 20 from 3 to 7 p m. All items donated by Navasota merchants with proceeds funding Kiwanis youth activities including a 600 scholarship for a Navasota High School graduate. Central will host bids via phone at the Navasota Telephone Company with Kiwanis members updating listings and mic coverage. The top item is a Zenith black and white TV valued at 189 95 donated by Turner Pierce and Bingham.
