Fatal Car Crash Claims Gene Mallett At 19
Funeral services were held for Gene Mallett age 19 of Navasota who died in a two car collision near Industry on May 31. Mallett had recently returned to Navasota from Luling and was en route to a Victoria job interview. Police reported the crash at 9:30 a.m. after his car skidded into oncoming traffic. He was a 1959 Navasota High School graduate and member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include his mother, a sister, a brother serving with NATO in France, and several relatives.

Seaman Grice Injured in Grenade Fuse Explosion
Seaman John Lee Grice son of Mr and Mrs James Grice of Navasota was injured June 1 aboard the USS Philip at Honolulu Hawaii when a hand grenade fuse exploded while he was replacing it in a small arms ammunition locker. He suffered loss of parts of several fingers and multiple wounds to neck chest and head though not described as serious. He will be confined to Tripler General Hospital Honolulu for 30 days.
