Train train tragedy on Texas rails kills migrant worker
A 25 year old Mexican national Leopoldo Lara was decapitated by a Southern Pacific freight train near Navasota while sleeping between the Houston to Hearne tracks. The victim, employed by Ram Forge and Steel, was identified by papers on the body and carried by train crew to a nearby ambulance.

City budget hearing set Monday for 1974 75 plan
Navasotans will have three hours to comment on the proposed 865 538 municipal budget for 1974 75 during a public hearing from 5 to 8 p m Monday at City Hall. The sum is up less than five percent over the current 829 000. Most of the 36 538 increase funds the water system and natural gas distribution.

Voelter Wins Grimes County Runoff by 39 Votes
Incumbent Fred Voelter defeated Grover Mitchell by a 290 to 251 tally at Navasota City Hall during the Grimes County Precinct 4 Democratic runoff. The 531 votes represented about 28 percent of the 1,900 eligible voters, with Voelter's total including 286 ballot votes and 4 absentee.

A Grimes County Dairy Queen coronation will crown one of ten candidates at the fourth annual Grimes County Dairy Association barbecue at Firemen's Hall. Four Guilty Pleas Lead To Probated Texas Sentences
In Anderson district court on May 28 Judge Jas F Warren accepted four guilty pleas and sentenced four men to probated terms in the Texas Department of Corrections. A summoned jury panel was dismissed. Howard Waite and Crawford tied to eight year probations for tractor theft from Larry English of Shire, while Crawford drew three years. Willie Herod Jr also received a three year probated sentence for stealing an automobile transmission battery charger and other auto parts from Bill Hertenberger.

The Texas Highway Commission let three contracts totaling 539,998.97 for work in Navasota and Grimes County. Pit Construction Company of Lufkin received 130,945.79 for 5.6 miles of FM 1774 resurfacing. R. E. Butler, Inc. of Bryan earned 98,897.80 for bridges and approaches between 3.6 miles north of SH 105 and 1.1 miles south of SH 30. R. B. Butler, Inc. of Bryan won 310,155.38 for lime stabilized base and surface treatment from Singleton to Bedias.

Preliminaries start June 12 with weighing of market steers and market swine at the American Legion Grounds in Anderson. The three day event runs June 13 to 15 featuring livestock produce home economics projects and a large open dairy show.
