Mobley added 10.00 toward mounting the city hall clock on the Masonic building, bringing the total to 117.50 plus mayoral salary pending. A steel beam and 1000-lb bell are secured, Masonic approval given, and an engineer confirms support. 883.00 cash remains to reach 1,000.061

Pine Bluff Grows on Arkansas River With New Mills

C H Brown celebrates Pine Bluff Arkansas growth as steel mill skeletons rise on the Arkansas riverbank. Projections by an authority include 2 250 factory jobs 1 665 other positions 2 500 homes 90 new retail shops and a $13 000 000 income rise. Population to exceed 57 000 next year. B T Henry at Carver School reports an 18 inch coral snake captured at Centerpoint cemetery Plantersville. coral is among Texas's most poisonous reptiles.

Patout To Attend University of Mexico For Summer Session

R. A. Patout HE who has just completed his first year at Notre Dame University will leave this week for Mexico City where he will attend the summer session of the University of Mexico. Patout jr accompanied by two of his children Bill and Elizabeth made the round trip to South Bend last week to bring his son home.

3rd Victim of Head On Collision Dies Saturday

A fatal head on crash Friday near Navasota claimed three lives. R. L. Ripley of Waco died on arrival at Brazos Valley Hospital. Bobby Wheeless of Bryan and his wife died at the Bryan hospital after being freed from a wrecked 1954 Mercury. Suzanne Wheeless survived unharmed. A double funeral was held Sunday in Bryan.

450 Volumes Donated During Book Festival

Mrs. J. D. Webber, chairwoman of the Navasota Public Library Book Festival committee, announced that 450 volumes were donated during the festival week. She thanked donors and noted books continue to arrive for the library board.

City Commission OKs Higher Garbage Rates

In a special session on Monday night the City Commission voted to raise residential garbage pickup rates to 1.00 per month starting July 1, the city’s new fiscal year. The move follows years of losses around 1,000 dollars annually and needed repairs to aging equipment, including a 1948 loading machine and a 1949 garbage truck.

Work To Proceed On Highway 90 Widening

Navasota City Commission approved paying 8600 to the State Highway Department to cover curb and gutter costs from the Santa Fe tracks to Foster Street. The 3.2 mile section will widen to 64 feet with two parking lanes and four moving lanes.

Mrs West Appointed Grimes County Clerk In Texas News

Mrs D W West of Navasota route 1 was appointed Grimes County clerk to fill the unexpired term of the late L S Stampley by the Grimes County Commissioners Court in a special session at the courthouse in Anderson. West had served as deputy to the tax collector since January 1949 and will serve until January 1 1959. The late Stampley died May 29 in a Houston hospital after 21 years in the office.

Prestwood to Leave July 4 for Scout Jamboree

Clyde Lee Prestwood, Navasota high school principal and Grimes District chair, will depart July 4 with 113 Scouts and 12 leaders from Region Nine to the National Jamboree at Valley Forge, then Jubilee in England. Accompanied by his son, the group sails from New York to Plymouth and travels to Sutton Coldfield, England, for a world Scout gathering of about 35,000. After visiting Europe, they sail from La Havre back to New York, arriving September 6 for the Houston and Navasota return.

Three Postal Employees Take Exam Here Friday

Bert Hansen announced that J. B. Patzke administered routing examinations to three Navasota postal employees Friday. Wilson Shive scored a perfect 100 cards in five minutes, Ben Curd Jr. 99, Albert Hemann 97, in a test covering 650 Texas towns with 100 used.

Army Reservists To Leave June 15 For Summer Camp

Lt Ed Hodges of Battery C 343rd Field Artillery Battalion Navasota announced that about fifteen reservists will depart Saturday morning June 15 for a two week summer field training program at Ft Polk Louisiana. Employers are urged to grant leaves and cooperate as attendance is mandatory by law. reservists will return home as civilians after the training.

Navasotians joined Greater Dallas Fashion Market’s Fall and Back to School market week in Dallas from May 26 to 31. County Officials Render Vehicles For Tax Purposes

Grimes county will see a larger tax roll next year as autos are rendered for personal property taxes for the first time. County Judge Latham Boone notes notices may go to those who have not paid personal property taxes, to appear before the Board of Equalization to adjust renditions. Most notices are informative, but some residents will contest their valuations. Vehicle valuations include 1957 at 650, 1956 at 550, 1954 at 500, 1955 at 450, down to 1945 at 40 dollars.

Three Grimes Reservists to begin six month duty tour

Lt. Ed Hodges, commanding officer of Battery 343rd Field Artillery Battalion, reports three Grimes county reservists will leave Sunday for six months active duty at Camp Chaffee Arkansas. Privates Lovett Boggess Anderson Donald Stang Nav asota and Pascual Baldobino Courtney will serve then return home to continue obligations. They take advantage of Armed Forces Reserve Act benefits including high school completion draft deferment on completion of service and local home town obligation.

Don Hatcher, after three years of service in the U.S. Army, becomes a new employee in Patout's Shoe Department. He attended local high school in 1950 and 1951 and completed his education while serving in the armed forces.

Luther Pearson Opens New Tastee Freez Drive-In

Luther Pearson of New Caney opened a Tastee Freez drive-in at the corner of highway 6 and Holland Avenue last Saturday. He plans to move his family to Navasota once suitable housing is found. Pearson, former Brazos county school superintendent, has held multiple superintendencies in Klein, Riesel, and New Caney. He and his wife have five children: Dorothy, Marla Jean, Linda Joyce, Earl, and James. He is active in First Baptist Church, the Lions Club, and was Klein Lions Club Charter President.
