Registration for Red Cross swimming classes will be held Saturday June 13 from 9 to 11 a m at the municipal pool. Children seven and older may enroll. parents or consent required. Classes run June 15 to July 1 with lifeguard training after. Teens may volunteer by calling Mrs. Harris at 825-6100.
Grimes County voters prepare for Democratic runoff on Saturday with key contests for Precinct 1 commissioner between E C Pritchett and L M Gressett and a sheriff’s precinct 4 race between Steve Burzynski and George C Largent. Also active are the judge race Reginald Bracewell versus John W Phillips and Congress At Large contenders Joe Pool and Robert W Baker. Absentee requests reach 61 for Precinct 1 amid broad interest across 18 polling locations with record turnout expected in Iola Bedias. Voters may cast ballots 8 am to 7 pm.
Joe Piccolo of the Texas Highway Department announced a nine mile reconstruction on F M Road 1696 in Grimes County from F M Road 39 near Cross to State Highway 90 at Bedias. J P Atkinson of Wortham, contractor, expects work to start immediately and finish by September. Traffic will be routed through the site with barriers and signals, and motorists are urged to drive cautiously and obey signs and speed zones.
Ten Kiwanis sponsored Troop 361 members advanced in rank Tuesday night at the Scout Hut Court of Honor. First Class recipients: Jimmy White, Robert Walters, Jimmy Richardson. Second Class: Larry White, Larry Gayle, Wm. Anderson, Tom Maynard, Allen Jones, Gary Peret. Tenderfoot badges: Dickie Keelan, Raymond Bolenbarr. Ceremony led by Scoutmasters Jim Richardson and H. C. Stabler.
An eight day revival at Union Grove Baptist Church begins Sunday at 8 p.m. Services will be led each night by Ray Carrickson Henry Hall Johnny Seafcox Dan Bates and Douglas Tillery. The public is invited.
Mr. and Mrs. Meyer Silverstein and daughter of Webster City Iowa have been guests of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Hoffman and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Silverstein, sharing hospitality during the visit.
A joint Vacation Bible School of the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches will begin Monday June 8 and run through Friday June 12 from 830 to 1100 each day. Classes cover beginners primaries intermediates and teenagers with a nursery for workers children under four. Staff includes dean Mrs E P Ayres and assistants from many local families.
Grimes County ASC reporters will start measuring cotton and feed grain farms Friday. George Featherston urges farmers to provide full information on all share holders to ensure proper price support payments and accurate reporting.
Mr and Mrs Clifford James and their son of Navasota travel with Mrs James sister Mrs Ervin Schaefer and three daughters of Houston for a two week trip to the New York World’s Fair departing Sunday morning.
June Dairy Month observances highlight Grimes County's 106 dairy farmers with annual business over 3 million dollars. At the Courthouse Annex in Anderson leaders heard from American Dairy Association officials and Texas A&M experts about nationwide ads, market growth, and efforts to boost milk consumption in homes and restaurants. The talk stressed changing farm structures, shrinking farm count, and the need to expand demand for dairy products. Continued on back page.
Election returns Saturday night will be received at the Examiner by Bob Whitten Grimes County representative of the Texas Election Bureau. All county election judges are requested to call 825-6484 collect as soon as possible after polls close at 7 p.m.
Funeral services for Dr Robert Forrest Chappell of Navasota will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Scott-Harris Funeral Home chapel. The Rev B R Shelton and the Rev Larry Correll will assist. The 70-year-old veterinarian died June 2 at Grimes Memorial Hospital, having been born March 13, 1894 in Chappel Hill. He was a World War I veteran.
Open house for the new 78 by 30 foot single story brick facility of J C Galbreath M D and Donald C Kubricht BD DB will be Sunday June 7 from 3 to 6 PM. Located at Church Street and East Washington Avenue the building features a recessed Church Street entrance 18 off street parking spots plus additional gravel parking and a ramp for wheelchair access.
Five firms were added to the Kiwanis Radio Auction roster for Saturday June 13. Farquhar's Pharmacy offers a $25 value in drugs and prescriptions. Navratil Music Company of Brenham advertises a $25 RCA Victor record player. I. W. Lehrmann of Brenham features Pearl Beer distributor items including a large aluminum cooler and a small styrofoam cooler valued at $25. Navasota Federal Savings & Loan Association promotes a ½ inch Stanley electric drill and Atkins hand saw, $25 value, with honey as bid bonuses from Weaver Apiaries.
Scout Troop 361 of Navasota will depart Friday for a week-end camp out at Inks Lake near Lake Buchanan. About 25 scouts will participate with Scoutmaster Jim Richardson and assistants H. C. Stabler R. A. Patout Jr. Henry Walters and J. T. Gibson. They will visit Longhorn Caverns and the State Fish Hatchery and return Sunday.
A formal opening for the Bode Livestock Commission Company in Bryan is planned for the first week in August. The 272 by 381 foot facility on Highway 21 East will host Thursday sales at 11 a.m. with air conditioned lobby cafe and arena, housing up to 1500 cattle and 500 hogs, and full feed and water facilities. Bode also runs Brenham Livestock Commission Company each Monday at 11 a.m. Further details will be announced in the Examiner and on KWBC radio.
Mrs. Esther Wilcox announces summer routes with specific dates and stop locations. First series on June 9 with 13 stops from Anderson School to Erwin Community Center, second series on June 10 with Courtney to Plantersville Post Office.
Flora Weghorst, daughter of Mr and Mrs A F Weghorst of Navasota, was chosen Friday as High School drum major for the coming year by a panel of three judges. Twirlers include Elise Wingard, Dina Griffith, Benny Curry, Inez Lauter and Cheryl Watts. Kay Hilley was named junior high drum major for 1964 65 with twirlers Shirley Mickan, Linda Burns, Mary June Rockett and Patti Feagin. Judges were Bob Ham Blinn College Brenham Johnny Bankston Katy and Walter Philips Wharton.
