Dairy Queen contest and barbecue drew large Grimes County crowd

A June Dairy Month kickoff Friday at Firemen's Hall featured a barbecue and a queen's contest. About several hundred dairymen and supporters gathered as eight nominees competed for the queen title judged by four judges. Master of ceremonies was Allen C. Oliver of Caldwell, with Mrs. Rosemary Oliver, and the couple’s two children noted in brief.

PTA Spring Round-Up Slated Here Thursday

The Navasota PTA will hold a Spring Round-Up on Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Navasota Elementary School cafetorium to pre-register Head Start and kindergarten students. Health chairwoman Mrs. Herman Sebastian outlines required documents including a certified birth certificate and a smallpox and tetanus immunization statement from a doctor.

Dairy month focus and county dairy industry support

June is dairy month in Grimes County highlighting the dairy industry and its economic impact. The county hosts a dairy queen selection at Firemen's Hall with barbecue tickets $1.50 from the Chamber of Commerce. 115 dairy farms generate about $5 million yearly. Also notes redistricting talk, industrial park tour by Bellville delegates, and planning for business district promotion and a public relations seminar.

Kindergarten Pupils To Register Thursday

Pupils five years old by July 1 may enroll in the fall kindergarten at Navasota Elementary School. Registration starts at 9 a.m. Thursday at the school. Qualifying families must have annual income of $3,000 or less. Birth date proof and immunization records including smallpox and diphtheria tetanus are required.

Goodman and Beard Leave For Boys State

Navasota High School seniors Don Goodman and Joel Beard depart Saturday as delegates from American Legion Post 152 to the 1971 Boys State at the University of Texas. Sponsors include First National Bank of Navasota Security State Bank and the Navasota Kiwanis Club. An all-time high 840 boys will attend the session focused on citizenship through practical programs.

Man Injured Replacing Tire At Humble Service Station

Donald Ray Wesley, 27, was injured Friday at 12 noon when a tire repair at the Boenker-McKay Humble Service Station on South LaSalle caused a steel rim to fly off and strike his arm, breaking it.

Four-Year-Old Killed in Street Collision

Jefferson, four, son of Mr and Mrs Herbert Jefferson of 1309 Farquhar Street, died after being run over at Houston and Smith streets. Dairy Tour Planned at Draper Farm

A dairy meeting and tour sponsored by Anderson Feed & Supply and the Ralston Purina Company will be held Tuesday June 8 at 10 a.m. on the J M Draper farm four and a half miles southeast of Anderson on FM 2819. Charles Thanckston Purinas southern region dairy products manager will discuss a proper dry cow program. Hugh Moser Purinas dairy health manager will discuss sanitizing and clean up in the dairy barn. A barbecue lunch will be served after the program. All dairy farmers are invited.

Camp Navatanka To Open Monday

About 55 Navasota area girls will attend the annual Camp Fire Day Camp at Camp Navatanka three miles east on State Highway 90. The camp opens Monday at 8:30 a.m. under directors Mrs. Neal Bosse and Mrs. Pat Craddock with daily sessions 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Friday, plus a special family night picnic.

Woman Injured in Fall from Tree at State Park

Mrs. Barbara Wenzel, 26, wife of Dennis Wenzel of Houston, fell from a tree at Washington State Park Friday at 1 p.m., knocked unconscious and admitted to a local hospital with a head injury before transfer to a Houston hospital. She was accompanied by two unnamed women. The event occurred during a five day camp session run by Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls at Camp Navatanka, featuring archery, crafts, and hiking, with a family night closing ceremony on Friday.

Bond Sales Near 43 Percent of 1971 Goal in Grimes County

Grimes County reports April sales of Series E and H United States Savings Bonds at 5,235 with four month total of 42,821 and 43 percent of the 1971 goal reached. Texas April sales stand at 17,799,730 and year to date 69,658,537, with 38 percent of the goal met. Nationally, April savings bond sales totaled 463 million, up 26.7 percent from 1970, and four month sales reached 1,838 million, an 18.1 percent rise.

Head Start Sign-Up Set For Thursday At Sanger

Head Start sign up planned for Sanger Independent School District with two registration sessions from 9 to 11 30 a m Thursday at the Sanger Elementary auditorium. Navasota High School students elected class officers for the 1971-72 term. Seniors chose Craig Nooken as president with Debbie Fuqua as vice president and Neweta Quinn as secretary. Kenneth Sanford was named junior president and Mark leads the sophomores after ballots announced by Miss Martha Webb.

Red Cross Swim Class Seeks Saturday Registrants

Registration for an eight week Red Cross swimming program opens for first graders with Saturday sessions from 9 to 11 AM on June 12 led by Mrs. Joe Falco.
