Enroll for Swimming Class Opens at Navasota Pool
More than 300 youngsters report to the Navasota municipal pool for the opening day of Grimes County Red Cross swimming classes. Sixteen instructors and twenty five aides will guide 312 pupils divided among beginners intermediates and advanced beginners. The Navasota School Board discussed a tentative 830308.21 dollar budget for the 1965 66 school year and sent it to a five man board of equalization. The final budget will be set in August after the new Teacher Pay Raise Bill from the Texas Legislature is fully reflected. George Franks presided at swearing in for the equalization board. Burglary Charges After Night Church Break-ins
Billy Jack Williams of Waco and Bobby Harris of Alabama face burglary charges after allegedly entering three Navasota churches between 9 and 10 p.m. Williams was found near First Presbyterian Church eating a cookie believed stolen. Harris was arrested on Highway 6 while hitchhiking. Both will appear before the Grimes County Grand Jury. Williams has prior burglary and car theft sentences and is jailed on $750 bond.

Mayor Jeff Haynie Jr. will cut the ribbon at 2 p.m. Sunday to open the new Allphin Flower Shop at 410 So LaSalle. The shop moves from 308 So LaSalle after twenty years. Owners Ralph and Mrs. Hughes built a wood and brick 3150 square foot shop with modern features and parking for ten.

The Texas Highway Commission approved an $63,000 project to surface a section of State Highway 6 in Grimes County from two miles south of Navasota to the Walker County line about eight miles. Keelan Nominated for V F W State Office
John Paul Keelan of Navotas was nominated for Senior Vice Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Texas Department at District 17 convention in Caldwell. He also was re elected District Commander since May 1963 and received unanimous district support. Keelan is a Navotas High School graduate who attended Texas A M University until 1942, served as a B 17 pilot in the Eighth Air Force, was shot down over the North Sea and rescued, earning the Distinguished Service Flying Cross and multiple medals. He is a charter member and life member of Post 4006.
