25th Grimes County Youth Fair opens with livestock exhibits
The 25th annual Grimes County Youth Fair kicks off at the American Legion Fairgrounds in Anderson with weighing and tagging of steers and lambs at 5 p.m Tuesday June 7. Highlights include a youth livestock sale Thursday night and rodeo performances Friday and Saturday nights. Wayne Barrett of Montalba returns as rodeo producer. Admission is 2 for adults and 1 for children. Events span bareback riding calf roping steer wrestling barrel racing and more with judging for swine sheep beef dairy poultry rabbits and home arts across June 8 to 11. The youth livestock auction closes the event on Thursday June 9 following a buyer’s supper.

P. A. Smith Hotel Receives Matching Grants
Grimes County Historical Commission chair John Pierce announced a 75000 matching grant for the P A Smith Hotel Restoration and a 7500 grant for related aid at the bi monthly meeting on Tuesday night June 28 at Courtney Community Center. The GCHC must apply before March 1978. A plan for next meeting at Plantersville Stoneham Center is tentatively set for Sunday afternoon July 31. Pierce also noted a committee to schedule county meetings and Artie Hancock announced plans for the 1978 Nostalgia Tour homes tour on April 8 with First Baptist Church marker dedication segueing to Page 16.

Grimes retail sales show healthy climb in 1976
Grimes County enjoyed solid retail growth in late 1976 with statewide sales up about 23 percent. State comptroller analyses show Grimes County October to December sales of 23.47 million dollars, taxable sales at 12.25 million, across 322 outlets averaging 72,899.21 per business. Washington County led the region with 635 outlets, while Grimes ranked fourth among seven counties in the state study.

Washington youth dies in pickup crash near church
Funeral services were held for 19 year old Alton Carl Dickschat of Washington County who died when his 1976 Chevrolet pickup failed to negotiate a curve on Farm Road 1155 near Frieden's United Church of Christ. He was pronounced dead at the scene and was later buried in the church cemetery. He was a Brenham High School graduate and Brentex Chromalloy employee.
