Community readers are asked to invite neighbors to a five day chest X-ray survey funded by the Texas State Health Tuberculosis Division and county officials. The effort aims to detect early TB to enable prompt cure and prevent progression. Also notes TV program features Silverstein's Food Market and Lucky Seven Stores, plus travel news of Joe Mims and a Tacoma graduate.
Funeral services for Martha Cena Roan Kilpatrick 89 of Navasota will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home chapel with Rev James Lambert officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. She died Thursday at 6 35 a m at her home. Born May 25 1866 in Roans Prairie she was the daughter of P and Fannie Roan. She married H W Kilpatrick in 1888. he died in 1928. She moved to Navasota in 1918. Survivors include four daughters Eula Day Montie McAlpine Ida McCune Elizabeth Scott one son Walter Kilpatrick a sister Fannie Allen 13 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Pallbearers were grandsons G B McAlpine J M Day W K McCune Ivy Lee Kilpatrick Davis Cozart and Don Ewan.
Four thousand residents are urged to use a mobile TB chest X ray unit in Navasota from June 9 to 14 at the old First National Bank building. The program, sponsored by the Navasota Kiwanis Club with State Health Department support, aims to detect tuberculosis early and save community costs.
Queen Carolyn Wood and King John Bolton Foerster will reign over the Court of Love Songs during the ninth annual Watermelon Festival July 3-4. The pageant directors are Mrs. Sam Wood and the Grimes County Chamber of Commerce committee. The court includes Tulu lah Sue Hodges as lady-in-waiting, Anna Lois Morton as maid of honor, and other escorts and scepter bearers. Princesses, Nava sota duchesses, and the 1954 festival queen will pay homage to the monarch.
The American Red Cross swimming classes will start with registration on Monday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the swimming pool. Mrs. Harry Journeau, director, announced. The three week course runs June 13 to July 3, with mornings except Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. Junior and senior life saving will be offered in the final week to qualified students. Mrs. Journeau hopes for a large first two weeks and free classes. Mrs. Bob Harris assists as director.
Grimes County Game Warden Robert Lys reminded fishermen of license rules this week. Exemptions include saltwater sport fishing, under 17, or holding a commercial license. In Grimes County a license is needed only with artificial lures in fresh water. Licenses available in Navasota at Turner and Pierce Hardware Hardy's Hardware and Triangle Grocery.
The annual Camp Fire Girls day camp opened Monday with a large group of girls at the Anderson highway near Navasota. Mrs Thomas McIntyre leads with Miss Doris Smith as assistant. Counselors include Eula Clare Moore Mary Stewart Thomas Nancy Buchanan Kay Dean Janie Foskett Carolyn Harris Marian Bailey Ann Gibbs Jerry Stone Bonnie Fultz Susie Wheeler Margaret Hardy. Junior counselors are seventh grade girls. groups are Blue Bird and Camp Fire. The program covers aims outdoor craft and nature study with six groups.
The Navasota Rebekah Lodge 33 will sponsor a Pot Luck supper at Odd Fellows Hall at 7 p.m. Monday. Proceeds go to the IOOF orphans home at Corsicana and the Ennis old folks home. The public is invited.
The Civic Affairs Committee of the Grimes County Chamber of Commerce, led by Chairman J. H. McDonald, is designing a new city map brochure. This follows their successful Grimes County United Fund project. The group aims to combine map and pictorial brochure to promote tourism and local business, planning to finish soon.
Navasota School Board voted to award the sale of the $150,000 school improvement bonds to Shearson-Hammill of Dallas at a gross interest charge of 95,055 and a net rate of 2.99876 percent. Fourteen bond firms submitted bids with rates from 2.99876 to 3.2237. Superintendent O Dan Carter reported a Red Cross swimming school agreement, and the board will meet the city council about Carver School sewerage issues.

Ten members of the Navasota Future Farmers of America Chapter with sponsor H. O. Henderson and Mrs. Henderson travel from Washington, D C to Niagara Falls, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis and Texarkana then return to Navasota on June 15. They visit educational points and stay at Mac Potomac Motor Courts and Ralston Purina Mills.
Dr. Robert E. Greenwood told 52 Nava sota High School graduates at the 1955 commencement to pursue ongoing learning and stay curious. He warned that success depends on meeting world demands and continuing mental and spiritual growth, citing Texas water resources as a challenge solvable by diligent high school graduates. Michael Hardy spoke on America, praising its wealth and trust in yesterday, today, and the future.
M. S. Croft resigns as manager of the Commerce Grimes County Chamber of Commerce effective June 15. Paul W. Manning, elementary principal, to act as interim manager for a couple of months while a replacement is sought. Croft previously came to Commerce in 1952 from the University of New Mexico.
A two ton red International truck with black front fenders was stolen from Smith Brothers Implement Company after closing Saturday night and before opening Monday morning. The vehicle rested on the lot between the Smith Bros Implement building and J Walte Smith’s home and featured unpainted low 2 by 2 side boards.
Mr and Mrs Robert L Bosse spent Sunday visiting with Mr and Mrs W M Pennington of Houston William Wood has returned home from Waller where he visited the family of Royal Burnside
Silverstein's Food Market at 219 West Washington avenue announces affiliation with Lucky Seven Stores Inc. Ben and Fanny Silverstein started in produce in 1916 and opened the grocery here 35 years ago. The 3,000 square foot corner shop now joins a larger buying network to boost services.
Memorial Day observances included placing small American flags on 56 veteran graves at Oakland Cemetery by J. Willie Leigh American Legion Post 152 members. The four Navasota churches will start two-week summer Bible schools Monday with St. Pauls Episcopal and Trinity Lutheran leading the program. classes run 9 to 11 15 am with devotional and crafts, taught by named church members.
Kosse promoter Ray K Wright will again produce the Watermelon Festival rodeo with two performances set for July 2 and the afternoon of July 4. Stock will be supplied by the arena director and rodeo officials.
The May Grimes County Scout Leaders round table meeting is postponed until June 20 and will be held with the district meeting at Rice Buchanan farm.
The Washington National Insurance Company of Evanston Illinois will hold a formal opening of its new district office from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday June 25. The office occupies the second floor of the First National Bank building at Farquhar street and Washington avenue and will serve Walker Montgomery Waller Washington Fayette Grimes and Brazos counties with eighteen agents. Attending officials include A B Duisen and H L Robinson from Evanston. P A Massey district manager will relocate here with his wife and four children Billy 18 Beryl 16 Virginia 14 and Claudia 11. Massey has 18 years with the company and is a Houston native.
Robert Lys of Wheelock, Texas A M C graduate, is assigned to Navasota and Grimes County to protect game. He replaces J D Robertson of Bryan who covered Brazos County. Lys resides in Navasota and is alert for illegal hunters, having served in the area during the past deer season.
Coach Wannie Miller announced the Navasota swimming pool will stay open until 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Saturday nights each week starting this week.
