Navasota's building surge continues with 1969 growth expected in residential and commercial sectors. City records show 1968 permits totalled 927,130 for construction with residential 664,130 and commercial 263,000 while highway loop and Millican Dam plans promise added investment. Local expansion points to a strong year ahead.
Babson's December forecast notes a Nixon era start with continued Vietnam tensions, inflation and a looming recession pockets. It predicts 1969 will bring reduced battlefield consumption but rising arms spending and a space race revival, with emphasis on skilled labor and advanced tech.
A weekend rash of auto accidents kept Navasota police, Grimes County deputies, and state patrol busy. James Caldwell of Navasota was rushed to Grimes Memorial Hospital after his car skidded off State Highway 90 four miles west of town. Three other occupants escaped serious injuries. A second two car crash on West Washington Avenue caused heavy property damage with no major injuries.
All Navasota merchants will close Wednesday January 1 in observance of the New Year. The holiday is one agreed upon earlier by area merchants.
Grimes County citizens with relatives in the military can send holiday greetings via MARS. Everard Ketchum and J. P. Fuqua operate under Air Force and Army MARS networks to relay messages worldwide with quick delivery and return options for stateside personnel.
Two people die and six are injured when a school bus skids on State Highway 105 four miles east of Montgomery, plunging through a bridge railing and down an embankment. The deceased are Ada Lena Parrish of Conroe and driver Albert Jones Kirby of Hempstead. Sheriff’s deputy C. E. Crank investigated.
The two day Rattler Invitational at Navassa High School gym features eight top area teams including Navassa Rattlers. Action runs Friday and Saturday January 3 and 4 with a 8 30 p.m. championship. Tickets go on sale January 2 with 75 cents students 1 25 adults.
Government offices including the Navasota Post Office City Hall and Grimes County ASC will close Wednesday January 1 for New Year’s Day. Post and garbage routes adjust with mail home delivery suspended and routes delayed to Thursday January 2. City workers take a holiday and regular pickups shift accordingly.
Grimes County will hold a New Year oath of office ceremony at 9 a.m. January 1 at the County Courthouse in Anderson. County Judge H. W. Haynie said sixteen officials will be sworn in, with offices closed for the holiday. Named officials include Sheriff Dick Johnson and Tax Assessor-Collector Claude Jolly among others.
