Ninteen sixty eight NHS talent show features fourteen acts with a grand finale and curtain at 7 30 p m. Jared Patout hosts a 90 minute program themed The Red White and Blue with top three acts winning ribbons. Tickets cost 1 for adults 075 for students in advance 125 at door.
Several hundred people lined Washington Avenue for the annual Christmas parade. Credit goes to parade committee chair Jim Cleere parade marshal Robert A. Harris Mrs James Glover and chamber staff. Tree lighting on the esplanade was a joint effort with the City Navasota Telephone Company and Malcolm Meekins. Thursday was girls day at Grimes Memorial Hospital. Births include Michele Lynn Hughes born Dec 4 granddaughter of several families and twins Johanna Beth Leanna Beth Fuqua born Dec 5 with other newborns Carmen Denise Mock and Mellody Mattern.
Sixteen South Texas schools join the Carver Christmas Music Festival on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Carver auditorium gym. Ball High School choral group from Galveston and B. C. Elmore Senior High choir from Houston will perform amid the Peace on Earth theme.
The Tuesday Chamber of Commerce meeting announced five new directors, filling a board vacancy, plus a Citizen of the Year committee and a membership campaign. New directors include Jimmy Bond, W E Gibson Agency, Joe McClelland, R M Stephens, Mrs H L Stewart, and Grover Mitchell. H A Cope was appointed to fill the unexpired term. A secret committee will select the Citizen of the Year for the January 23 banquet with John Hill as guest speaker. E L Maris will head the membership drive and a charter/bylaws amendment letter will be sent to members.
The Navasota Civic Club sponsors a residential outdoor Christmas lighting contest with prizes for the most outstanding display and the cleverest arrangement. Gulf States Utilities donates prizes to be shown in the downtown office window. Judging occurs between 6 and 9 p.m. during the week of December 18 to 25. Participation aims to boost the town's holiday spirit.
Indications are that Navasotans will need two new men to fill vacancies on the Navasota City Commission early next year after Mayor Pro-Tem Dr. L. C. Coleman and Councilman C. N. Bud Powell hinted they will not seek re election. Coleman, serving since 1965 in Position No. 5, will not run again. Powell, elected in 1967 to Position No. 4, is also stepping away after the Feb 15 election.
Grimes County produced two winners in the District 9 Make It Yourself With Wool contest at Sam Houston State. Barbara DeBusk won adult first place and a chance at state in Lubbock. Vicki Stolz placed third in senior division and became senior division state alternate.
The 1968 PTA Christmas Pageant will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the high school auditorium. Three choral groups and the Navasota High School concert band directed by Carlye Jorgensen will perform. Mrs Betty Grout’s elementary sixth grade chorus and the junior high and high school choirs directed by Evelyn O’Rourke participate, with sixth graders presenting a comedy titled A Visit from St Nicholas.
Grimes County tax assessor-collector J C Dyer announced the office at the Courthouse Annex in Anderson will close at 5 p m Friday Dec 20 and remain closed for the rest of 1968 to prepare reports for the state and county ahead of a tax collector change effective Jan 1. Members of the public with business are urged to complete it before the closing date.
Plantersville Texas plans a Christmas parade on Saturday December 21 at 2 p.m. The event features a chicken scramble with chickens tied to dollars for under 15 participants. Ernest Carraway will MC, Magnolia High School Band and many floats join a large parade led by Sheriff Dick Johnson.
A panel of 52 Grimes County residents reported Wednesday morning for possible petit jury service on ten criminal cases on the docket. The Texas Aeronautics Commission approved an $11,000 matching grant for August Horst Airport. City officials authorized paperwork and cited a total project value of $22,000 funded by the grant and city contributions. The plan covers runway lighting extensions land acquisition taxiways and other facilities.
