Born June 21 1921 in Quitman Wood County he grew up in Nacogdoches met his wife Florence Wilson and graduated from the University of Texas in 1941. A World War II naval officer he served on a destroyer and an aircraft carrier before earning a Harvard Law School degree in 1948-49 and returning to practice in Nacogdoches.

Right Of Way Secured For Grimes County Highway Widening
Grimes County Commissioners report right of way for widening state highway 90 between Anderson and the Navasota River bridge is nearly secured with about 75 percent obtained. Gulf States Utilities will relocate lines at its expense to clear the route, costs around 22000. City of Navasota must secure additional right of way west of the Santa Fe tracks to city limits before work starts.

A fire at 4:15 a.m. Monday destroyed the J. C. Powell Grocery Store in Bedias. The Madisonville Fire Department could not save the building, but saved a nearby cafe owned and managed by Mr. Powell. the loss was total with partial insurance coverage.
