Nav asasota Rattlers coach Hollis Hood says the 1968 squad is one week away. Players report to the gym at 6 PM on August 14 for initial workouts. Shoes and socks issued until August 19 when pads arrive and two a days begin August 19 at 7 AM.
Dr. L O Coleman of Navasota and his wife flew from Houston International Airport to Miami where Coleman serves as an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention. The piece notes his selection among Texas Sixth District delegates and mentions upcoming Rattlers football scrimmages against Luling and Cleveland with game times and district context.
The annual Grimes County ASC Community Committee election will be conducted by mail ballot on Sept 18. Ballots mailed Sept 6 must be returned in person by 5 p.m. Sept 18 or postmarked by Sept 18 to be counted. County communities are designated alphabetically.
About 1,600 Grimes County residents are expected to receive USDA surplus commodities at the Commodity Distribution Center in August. Last month 1,584 were served and certifications for August are ongoing, with completion required by Friday. A new center at Waller serves Waller County residents previously served by Grimes. Distributions run from Aug 12 to 16 and Aug 19 to 21, with several named areas listed for pickup.

After a decade of debate the Millican Dam would move from plan to reality once President Johnson signs the authorization. The Senate approved the project with a restudy condition for Navasota No 2 reservoir, clearing the path for the Army Corps of Engineers to begin construction at an estimated 58.62 million dollars in the 1970 fiscal year.
Administrators in the Navasota Independent School District plan registration for about 2,500 students this fall with all pupils in class by Tuesday September 3. A 10 a.m. general meeting and a 9 a.m. orientation run Aug. 28–29 in the high school auditorium.
More than 40 workers at First Baptist Church of Navasota prepare for a week long Vacation Bible School to run Monday through Friday led by Rev. Robin Guess. Preparation Day starts 8 30 a m Saturday with sessions for 4 through 15 year olds 8 30 to 11 30 a m daily. Classes include Bible study handwork and recreation with refreshments. The program utilizes part of the NHS campus and the elementary wing is being converted for use by Mr Peoples and high school classrooms under Principal Joe Dean Poteet.
The Rev. Alvin Blome will retire as minister of Friedens United Church of Christ in Washington on Sept. 1 after three years in the post. His last sermon is slated for Aug. 25 while he is on vacation. He will reside at 9705 Winsome Street in Houston after retiring. The church council seeks a successor.
Rev Chesson of the Anderson and Shire Methodist Churches leads a week long revival at Shire United Methodist Church starting Sunday. Services are 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday with W. E. Neason of Shiro directing singing. Public invited.
Navasota High School announces preseason reserve seats for five home football games at $6.25 each. Last year buyers told their seats will be held until August 25. Individual game seats cost $1.25 when sales start. Regular gate admission is $1.50.
A capable staff will teach at the Church of Christ Vacation Bible School Monday through Friday at 518 Church Street from 9 30 to 11 30 a m for preschool through sixth grade. Refreshments provided and all children are invited. Teachers include Mrs Scrivener Price Cobbler Cleere Smith Baird Hunt Baker and Talbot for various age groups.
Funeral services for Eric Lee Blair 78 of Lake Jackson were held at Lakewood Funeral Home. Blair, a former Navasota High School principal, died Sunday. He studied at Baylor for three years and earned a UT degree, beginning his career in Edna before moving to Navasota in 1926.
