Patrons will view the completed Grimes County Library Building at 110 Brewer Street during an open house Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. The 46 by 48 foot single story brick building, designed by Dan Slater and built by Dyer Lumber Mills, cost 21,695 with most of the amount debt free.
Navasota notes a travel column recounting a family vacation in Monterrey Mexico with six people sharing a motel room. The piece reflects on togetherness, humor, and peso to dollar price comparisons, noting family travel quirks and lighthearted gains from the trip.
Lloyd Quisenberry, director of the Navasota school bands for two years, resigned this week to become director of bands at Jackson Junior High School in Pasadena. He praised the support of the administration, faculty, parents, townspeople and students, and said the two years were enjoyable and unforgettable.
A fire at 9 p.m. Wednesday July 24 leveled Carter's Cafe at Iola. Sheriff Dick Johnson said the cafe near Main Street had been open less than six months. The building was virtually destroyed before discovery. Navasota Fire Department was not called. Cause of the blaze was not immediately known.
City Manager Jack Garrison announced continued two day per week voluntary water rationing as reservoirs refill. Water department reports Miller Street 400000 gallon tank and 250000 gallon surface reservoir full again while wells keep pace. Officials monitor reserves after near depletion last week and the city closed the municipal pool.
Coach Royal James announced Tuesday that the swimming pool will reopen Friday afternoon after a weeklong closure due to a critical water shortage. The improved city water supply allows refilling the pool.
Clyde Callison, long time Burleson Lee Soil Conservation District soil conservationist at Caldwell, becomes unit conservationist for the Navasota office after Rex Robinson resigns to join a Quitman lumber yard partnership. The Callisons have two children, Linda and Leslie, with Leslie holding a Baylor BA.
Grimes County growers planted 8 635.2 upland cotton acres in 1963. The county ASC reports 1962 allotments at 10 133.6 acres, with 1 498.4 acres less than 1963. Nationally about 14 856 000 acres were planted in 1963, down from 16 293 000 in 1962.
A Sunday raid on the Alex Greenwood Cafe at Plantersville resulted in arrests including Otis Greenwood George Smith Joe E Mallard and Betty Joyce Greenwood for illegal sale of beer in a dry area. All four pleaded guilty before Judge Joe Haynie with fines of 129 each. Andrew Greenwood and Robert Paldo faced charges for consuming alcohol in public before 1 pm Greenwood pleaded guilty and paid 22.50 Paldo was released on bond with case pending.
Dr. W. S. Conkling was named campaign chairman by R. A. Patout Jr. for the Navasota and Grimes County United Fund drive. The campaign runs in the coming weeks until about October 15. Elliott Goodwin will lead efforts outside Navasota, with J. H. McDonald handling Century Club big gifts. Other officers include A. W. Baird vice president A. C. Pratt treasurer Otto Lohmeyer budget chair and R. H. Whitten publicity chair.
Prospective students at Navasota High School were urged by Supt. John C. Webb to finish their 1963 64 schedule promptly. Those who have not yet indicated their course of study should report to Principal J. D. Chaney's office to supply the necessary information.
Smoke pours from the second floor as Navasota fire volunteers fight Mrs. N. M. Whitaker’s house on East Washington Ave. The blaze, aided by bystanders, draws more than twenty firefighters who battle for over an hour before the fire is controlled.
A fast spreading fire gutted the upstairs of Mrs. N. M. Whitaker’s two story home at 716 East Washington Avenue on Saturday. Wayne Massey raised the alarm from across the street and helped warn occupants. Firefighters battled for over an hour, blocking Washington Avenue as hoses were laid to reach the upper floor. No injuries were reported, and damage estimates were not available Tuesday.
Navasota Rattlers announce a August 19 official practice start for the 1963 19 AA grid season under Coach Royal James. About 60 players expected to report with twice daily sessions, weights and isometric drills, helmets and shorts. Season opens September 6 at Katy with six home games and four away.
