Poles Honor Generals as Heritage Month Opens
The Polish American Heritage Group of Naugatuck marks Polish American Heritage Month in October with a ceremony at Union City memorials for Casimir Pulaski and Tadeusz Kosciuszko. About 40 members gathered near Pulaski Walk and Kosciuszko Bridge, while discussions eye a monument at the Naugatuck Railroad Station. State Rep. Kevin DelGobbo awarded citations to Chester Drzoscz and Peter Drelichowski for aiding Polish flood victims. Drzoscz praised DelGobbo and recalled Auschwitz's impact on Poles and others. Drzoscz will present books on Holocaust tribulations at the Howard Whittemore Library.

Zoning panel weighs appeal over subdivision ruling

Two Waterbury men arrested in drug crackdown
Two Waterbury men were arrested on October 9 after a three month narcotics investigation in which they allegedly sold heroin cocaine and crack to undercover officers. Andrew Mendillo 21 and Edward Serrano 17 face multiple counts and bonds were set at 150000 and 75000 respectively.

Charter revisions head to public hearing and vote
Public hearing on Charter revisions set for Oct 2 at 7 p m by the Board of Mayor and Burgesses. After the hearing the board will decide to refer the changes to a referendum or return the Vision Commission to the drawing board. The commission submitted its final draft to the borough clerk, with three of four questions unchanged from voters 1996 approval and one minor alteration. The Board of Education filed a lawsuit over the Vision process.

John Denver Dies in Monterey Bay Plane Crash
Pacific Grove Calif AP reports singer John Denver aged 53 died in a single engine plane crash. The body was recovered from Monterey Bay as the Monterey County coroner confirmed the death. Teri Martell, Denver's former wife Annie's sister, said Denver loved flying and died doing what he loved.
