A morning blaze at 166 N Main St caused by a malfunctioning clothes dryer left two families homeless. Fire began in the basement and climbed to the first floor, causing heavy fire and water damage to the kitchen and basement. Fire Chief Kerry Flaherty cited the origin and extent of the damage. Mayor Timothy Barth was sworn in after winning the mayoral race against Fayne Erickson and Mindy Fragoso among others. Erickson finished second by 904 votes as about 60 residents watched the ceremony. outgoing Mayor William C. Rado Sr. handed over the gavel ending his seventh term.
After over three hours of budget talks, the Joint Boards kept Naugatuck’s mill rate at 55.6 for 1997-98, avoiding a tax increase on a $65.6 million plan. Mayor Timothy Barth praised the priorities set and cuts in personnel, insurance, and school capital projects, including moving $658,000 from the Board of Education to debt service amid concerns about long term funding.
Phyllis Burns to receive the Mother of the Year Award from the Fraternal Order of Eagles at a June first ceremony in the High Street club. Nominated by son Thomas, an Eagle, who highlighted her community service and support at countless sports events, meals, and family duties.
In Stamford Connecticut during Alex Kelly rape retrial the defense questions a $150 payment to witness Thomas Kelly for lost wages claiming illegality. Prosecutors defend it as standard practice. Judge Tierney sent the jury home pending clarity on whether statutes or regulations permit such payments.
Mayor Timothy Barth pledged to address Naugatuck school space needs by appointing a 15 member School Building Committee. The panel will install portable classrooms at several elementary schools as quickly as possible and includes diverse members to tackle overcrowding.
The borough considers buying the 9,000 square foot Water Street railroad station as a possible historical center. Officials note serious interest from three parties while talks with the owner and plans to repurpose Building 25 unfold. The Naugatuck Historical Society seeks renovations and a cultural use, with funding shifted from Building 25 to historical projects.
