Clarence Coombs piloting an Orenco biplane claimed a new altitude record for a pilot and three passengers after rising to 17 140 feet over Mineola on May 17 in a flight of one hour and forty six minutes. The previous mark of 17 100 feet was set at Mineola by Captain Lowell Smith on May 10.

Waterbury police learned that four Brass City boys Wilfred Duffy Henry Jun France John Cunningham and James Marshitela were arrested in Newark New Jersey on a charge of stealing a car taken from a local Waterbury garage.
May 18 Torrington police arrested Thomas F. Bowie of New Haven and a man calling himself Charles J. Waldig after a truck driven by Bowie contained three barrels of bonded whiskey. Waldig rode with Bowie. both were held for federal authorities. They claimed intention to go to New York and gave no explanation of possession.

Martial law rumors circulate as Londonderry sees rioting, troops occupy residences, and mobs clash with Sinn Fein and Orange groups. National debate on Irish bill intensifies in Parliament.
Norwalk reports an ongoing inquiry into motor vehicle thefts totaling about $100,000 over recent weeks. Deputy Perry, Joissner, and Armstrong from the New York Police Automobile squad assisted in the probe seeking a local staging or directing shop for disguising stolen cars into saleable units. Hoboken, May 18. Police continue to question William Schlegal on charges of murdering Fritz Rueckert, VP of White Metal Mfg. Co. Readings from his movements since Rueckert's death raise questions, while Schlegel insists on innocence claiming a neck wound from pig iron handling in Youngstown. Police view him as the likely killer, citing alibi contradictions. Schlegel, nicknamed Berlin Willie, arrived in 1914 as a sailor on a Hamburg America ship and was interned during the war.

U S representatives at the Mexican embassy will observe the reconstruction period and report to aid policy. No diplomatic dealings with the revolutionary regime are planned, and U S recognition remains uncertain. George T Summerlin leads the embassy in Mexico City as acting representative. Should Morgenthau be confirmed soon he may stay in the United States until the situation clarifies. The Mexican embassy notes it contemplates Carranza as the head until resignation.
Gen. Alvaro Obregon told United Press in Mexico City via Laredo Junction on May 17 that he does not expect quarrels among revolution leaders once Carpanzistas power is broken. He said views of Obregon and Gen. Pablo Gonzales have been harmonized, with Carranza and Gonzales loyalists as the main risks to the government.
Obregon says Curranza has no chance to regain power as public opinion and the military oppose him. He and Gonzales have harmonized their views after opposing Carranza for abusing the people's franchise. Obregon predicts Sarranza’s fall and eventual national tranquility.
Lynn May 18 General Electric announces a policy of retrenchment causing layoff of 1500 to 2000 workers this week. The cuts come as a result of non receipts of raw materials cancellations and a large volume of orders.
General Leonard Wood won the nomination on the fifteenth ballot at a mock Republican convention held at Williams College last night, with Herbert Hoover second, receiving 150 to Wood 158 votes as the event broke up early today.
