Robert Woodfield ended nearly 24 years on the Woodfield board as the Board of Mayor and Burgesses met. He launched a bid for mayor in January and lost the March 10 Republican primary to Tim Barth, now mayor-elect. He praised serving residents and improving borough services including firehouse expansion and a new police station.
Susie Maroney, 22, became the first woman to swim from Cuba to Florida, finishing in 24 hours 34 minutes at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. She fainted during a live TV interview shortly after emerging from the surf, drawing cheers from about 150 onlookers.
State officials acknowledge gaps in licensing records and abuse disclosures as parents are urged to inspect day care settings. The death of Raegan McBride intensified calls for better checks, with critics saying routine site visits and access to abuse histories are needed despite confidentiality rules.

Students stood, bowed, curtsied, and spoke to Mistress White, then split by gender to study math, pronunciation, writing with quill and ink, and a final spelling bee. Succotash proved tricky for several learners.
