The body of old David Houle son of Adolph Houls was found in a small canal running from the Willimantic River to the mill Saturday. He had been missing since Saturday and was seen near the river. Water was drawn off to recover him and his body was found at the bottom.
Hartford May 8 A 16 year old South Windsor boy reports a Connecticut River canoe mishap that drowned three youths Charles Keyes 18 Charles Chappell 2 and Richard Meade 18 all of South Windsor after the boat capsized near Windsor. Witnesses say two Hartford fishermen saw the struggle as the canoe, borrowed from Rockwell of South Windsor, overturned near the river.
Joy liner news reports the steamer Arkansas of the Jos Line sank after colliding with the barge Orlando nearly southeast of Pollock Rip lightship. One life lost. Sixty five passengers were landed at Vineyard Haven. The Arkansas sailed New York to Boston, 1156 gross tons, 678 net, 241 feet long, built Wilmington Colorado in 1877 with 36 crew.
Washington May 8 Despite expected streamlined clerical work, army officers face a mass of red tape. General Mackenzie wrestles a case of an artillery officer at 8 New England Fort who wants no thermometers. A month ago he asked the district adjutant and the letter has moved through 28 officers and as many clerks. Each indorsed the request, and if the officer buys thermometers himself he could face court martial for disrespect. When government thermometers are issued, they will travel the same circuit.
Hong Kong reports sighting Russian and Japanese ships as tensions rise in the Far East. British and Japanese vessels encounter each other near Honkobe Bay and the Angam coast while hospital ships approach Saigon. In Canasns, soldiers grow unruly amid revolutionary agitation and incendiary literature. officers implicated in aiding the movement face martial law.
Martin Madar a Pole employed at Crosby mills died yesterday in Glastonbury after drinking heavily and wandering toward home on a hillside. He allegedly ran into a wire fence and was found hanging by the neck in a posture that caused choking. Medical examiner Richards ruled accidental death. Madar leaves a wife and several children.
New Haven May 8 Coroner Mix finds the engineer and fireman in charge of the locomotive negligent for rushing a freight train that backed down onto Ralph Thrall wardmaster of the New Haven and Seymour line killing him on the platform.
In Berlin town court Hayes Q Trowbridge of New Haven was fined 10 dollars and costs for speeding yesterday. In the city court Charles Read of New Haven paid 10 dollars and costs totaling 2 dollars 42 cents for speeding. H A Vaill of Forestillo was released on promise to appear but did not and will be rearrested. A J Ingles of New York posted 25 dollar bonds to appear Wednesday. W Bliss of Boston & Albany railroad Van Renssacler Lansing of Holophone Glass Co and H Russell of New York forfeited bonds of 84 dollars.
May 8 reports a major forest blaze in Plymouth and surrounding towns destroying thousands of cords of wood. Fire teams from Carver Kingston and Plymouth battled since Friday noon with the Smelt Pond region hardest hit near Rocky Nook and Cobb and Drews factory areas. Two bigger fires threaten cottages and factories as winds shift, with exhaustion setting in among firefighters. Southington and Wolcott also report fires two miles out threatening Lake Compounce in a separate blaze.

Mrs. Thomas Lucan, 38, disappeared from her Baltic home in a night dress Friday morning and was found drowned in the Shetucket River a half mile below the mill yesterday. A search party had pursued the area for hours. no cause is given for her act. She leaves a husband.
Edward Oakley, a former car proprietor in New Haven, was killed Sunday morning when struck on the trolley track near his home. He rode past his destination on the return trip, then alighted near his residence. two hours later a car struck a man on the track, and the victim was identified as Oakley, about fifty years old.
In Norwich T. Brown, long viewed as the Windham county hopeful for Congress to succeed Brandegee, says he is not a candidate and explains reasons. Bridgeport May 8 The oyster sloop Chrystis owned and sailed by Captain Jack of Stratford was struck by a squall between Bridgeport light and Steeplechase Island. After mast and sails were carried away the vessel capsized and all 40 occupants were thrown into the water but all were rescued. The Helen watch boat aided the first rescue and a bridgeport tug later assisted when some men were exhausted.
In Chicago May, at the county building, a swift divorce session saw one judge decide two cases simultaneously, then two judges address two more. Four divorces were completed in nine minutes, beating a prior Chicago record. Judges Bishop and Frost, country officials, aided in lightening the docket.
