Former Heaven's Gate member dies as other survives
In Encinitas California two former Heaven's Gate members attempted suicide after leaving exit statements and packing bags. Wayne Cooke of Las Vegas was found dead while Chuck Humphrey of Denver survived, in a case linked to the Hale-Bopp comet lore and notes referencing joining the leader on the other side. Humphrey, 56, was hospitalized in critical condition.

Drill Sergeant faces charges in trainee mistreatment case
Fort Leonard Wood. Staff Sgt. Steve A. Holloway, a 14 year Army veteran, pleads innocent to 18 misconduct allegations as a court martial begins.
