Interest rose over who will be President Wilson's political representative at the San Francisco convention. J B P Tummully plans to stay in Washington. Homer S Cummings, temporary chairman, now likely to deliver the keynote speech. Other names include Postmaster General Burleson and Newton D Baker.
The Methodist general conference in Des Moines will let delegates vote on or against military training. Chaplain Oliver, special delegate from Washington, D. C., said a resolution endorsing United States Army training will be introduced.

Early returns from about one fifth of California precincts show Senator Aliram Johnson leading Herbert Hoover two to one for the Republican endorsement. Hoover’s headquarters conceded the result but said the campaign would continue vigorously as estimates suggested a 70,000 vote advantage for Johnson. No Democratic contest was reported.

Providence May 5 Reports reach Federal Fair Price Commissioner Munroe from Rhode Island cities on sugar prices to curb profiteering. He cites a chaotic market driven by supply shortage and abnormal demand and warns that sugar profiteers will be prosecuted under federal law. Sugar is selling at 32 cents per pound in Providence today.
Paris May 5 The Hungarian peace treaty will be handed to the Hungarian delegation tomorrow. They have ten days to sign the pact.
Three hundred molders and core makers at Woonsocket Machine and Press, Tatmont Foundry, and Charlotte Brothers Foundry walked out on May 5 seeking concessions.

Providence May 5 Governor Beeckman offered a reward of 500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of Oliver Eklund a Providence chauffeur found dead in a mill pond at Taunton last Sunday

Ralph Greenlaw, son of Francis Greenlaw, was murdered by Mexican bandits near El Oro, Texas, on May 5, according to reports received. The killers had previously murdered Francis Greenlaw and his other son. Reports also confirm Torreon’s capture, with rebels poised for a concerted push toward Mexico City, planning the drive since Juarez’s fall.
Muskegee Oklahoma May 5 rescue workers recovered 55 bodies from the Peges wreck. The list of injured stood at 150 as burial of the dead began last night. A relief fund was being subscribed today.

Pittsburgh May 4 A University of Manchester graduate chemist Robert Tyde claims to have invented a process to extract high grade sugar from ordinary sawdust at about three cents per pound. He says one pound of sawdust yields three quarters of a pound of sugar and reports decades of experiments culminating in a lab method that consumes about ten hours.
Premier Millerand plans to urge Lloyd George that Germany pay the allies a fixed annuity of 6 billion dollars over 30 years. Spa conference draws heavy press attention as the Daily Mail urges the allies not to spare aggressors at France's expense.
Boston May 4 Gov Coolidge faced the 2.75 beer bill for signature authorizing manufacture and sale of beer and light wines in the state. The measure reached him yesterday from the state senate after being signed by President Mecknight.

Johnson's campaign headquarters call the result the greatest triumph in California politics and claim broad support from all interests.
Senator Borah pressed for a Senate inquiry into Gen. Wood campaign spending citing Ohio and Indiana primary work. Senate leaders would name a committee but Borah and allies insist on dictating its personnel and demand full publicity of all facts.

Kentucky Democrats in Louisville vote to send 26 delegates to the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco pledged to Gov. James M. Cox of Ohio. A slate with half votes per delegate includes Senator A. O. Stanley, J. C. W. Beckham, Rep. A. W. Darley, Ben Johnson, Desha Beckenridge, Laura Clay, Nora Layne, Cora Wilson Stewart. J. W. Camden named national committeeman.
In Valencia on May 4 two workmen were killed and four arrested after a clash between strikers and gendarmes in the city center. A mob gathered in the business district, breaking shop windows before police intervened.
