Borough CD To Take Part In State Test
Borough CD will participate in Connecticut's first full-scale statewide civil defense test since World War II on June 37. State Director William Hesketh announced the alert begins at 10:00 AM. Civilian Defense Director Henry Racks said plans aim for 100 percent cooperation from borough residents and CD personnel, auxiliary police, and block wardens. Instructions will come from the State Civil Defense headquarters. Publicity will be provided.

Fire damages six stores as floor sweepings spark blaze
A South Main Street fire caused by floor sweepings from Tony's Smoke Shop and cigarette ashes swept through the building, routing eight families. Fire Marshal John Bullivan estimated damages at a couple thousand dollars. The blaze was discovered at 10:45 by Anthony Santon and confined by fire crews and volunteers. Residents fled in night attire while others retrieved belongings. The three story frame structure, about 100 years old, housed Al's Quality Market and Blumbere's Plumbing Supply on the first floor. Ownership is unclear, with a meeting set for 5:30 pm between owners and fire officials. Occupants listed in the city directory include Laura A. Moniz and others.
