March 24 Ponce Porto Rico conditions worsen as hunger rises among the poor. Rice beans and codfish prices soar 50 to 100 percent. Demonstrations erupt in San Juan Mayaguez Yauco Arcito Aguadilla Fajardo Joana Diaz Guayame and other towns over U S delays in unsettled open questions. Wealthy landowners and many Americans lack cash and seek work.
Charles Phinney a Butler farmhand 18 weak minded by dime novels is jailed in Warne county awaiting grand jury action for grand larceny. He stole 300 from John and Henry Everhart, fled to Walcott bought guns and boots then hid in Sexsmith woods. Deputy Prevost nabbed him with $203.44. Boots turned in for cash.
Pittsburgh report states six hour conference ends with all disagreements resolved. Carnegie, Frick, Schwab, Lovejoy and Henry Phipps lead $160 million subscribed capital forming the largest U S corporation. Key figures include Andrew Carnegie 70 million plus, Henry Phipps 18 million, Frick 16 million, Schwab 18 million, Lovejoy 8 million. Charter to be filed next week with James B Dill appointed general attorney. Directors to meet here to elect officers and finalize details.

Topeka March 24 The Daily Capital reports the Capital company has not paid Rev. Mr. Sheldon his portion of profits totaling about 265600 from a recent Christian newspaper experiment. No one knows the exact share, including Mr. Sheldon, who says he has not received anything. It is understood he plans to use any funds to beautify a negro settlement called Tennessee town near established homes, reflecting his prior changes there.
Pasquale Patrona, an Italian section hand, was slain in his Maplewood shanty near the Buffalo Rochester and Pittsburg tracks. His skull was crushed, a spike hammer lay by the door, and the door to the bedroom had been forced open. John Myer, a transient, was arrested nearby and held on suspicion as investigators seek motive and details of the single violent act.

In Peabody Massachusetts a barge carrying Grand Army veterans overturned en route to Colonel Batchelder’s funeral, causing injuries including broken bones and internal damage to John C. McDonald. a defective axle caused the accident.
