Collision sinks Waesland after fog collision near Holyhead

The Cunard steamer Waesland bound for Philadelphia was struck by the Harmonides in thick fog 35 minutes before sinking off Holyhead. Passengers and crew were taken to the Harmonides, most in night attire, with two missing including Edward Dangerfield. One body recovered aboard the lifeboat. rescue handled with order and discipline amid calm sea conditions.

Waesland Disaster Reported as Ship Struck and Sunk

Survivors recall the Waesland collision that pitched occupants into the water and flooded the dining room. The vessel listed and the flare for help followed as passengers and crew faced exposure before rescue. Foreigners in steerage behaved bravely and women remained calm while the crew acted heroically.

Five Victims Recovered From Oatsburg Mine Fire

Monongahela City Pa March 7 five bodies of victims of the fire damp explosion at Oatsburg mine were recovered shortly after midnight and brought to the main entrance. Names include Robert Howrey 15 years Jamies Howrey 20 John Gelder 43 Eastwood 55 William McFarland 38. Two others John H Ager and James Tornet were seriously injured but expected to recover. Rescue work faced great danger as the mine continued to burn. Superintendent William Seddon, overcome by fire damp, remains in a critical condition today.

Court martial ordered for two Marine officers over Samar killings

Major Littleton Waller and Lieutenant John H A Day face court martial on charges of executing natives in Samar. A native was tied to a tree and shot in the thigh, then later in the arm and body, before a fourth fatal shot. Fears of diminished sanity linked to wartime privations arise as the trial is set for March 17. The two officers endured harsh conditions during the late 1901 Samar expedition from Lanang to Busey, supported by a relief force.
