Borough Attorney Rules Charity Board Lacks Lease Authority
In a morning opinion Borough Attorney James P. Sweeney states the charities department has no authority to lease the town farm and its equipment. The ruling arose after discussion by Warden Harris Whittemore Jr about leasing the farm and the borough running only the almshouse. The warden suggested the borough could buy farm products from a leaseholder, cutting agricultural operations, as farming costs exceed revenue. The warden and burgesses may sell or lease unused parts of the town farm, and if feasible, seek bids to lease the land and equipment while retaining the almshouse. If no bids appear, a fair rental for the farm could be sought. Farmers have shown interest, possibly offering a sizeable sum. The Supt. of Charities received the opinion regarding a June 5, 1926 board vote.
