President Harding today signed the army bill reducing the U S force from 220000 to 150000 men. He transmitted a message to Congress noting the embarrassment this causes and the likelihood of thousands of dismissals while stressing the need to keep faith with enlisted personnel. James A. Stillman former president of National City Bank faced sharp cross examination in the divorce suit against Fifi Potter Stillman. He also questions the paternity of Guy Stillman, with counsel pressuring for answers after prior refusals to answer on grounds of possible self incrimination.
More than 60,000 seats for the Carpentier Dempsey bout in Jersey City have sold and promoter Tex Rickard reports over 1.1 million dollars in hand. With weather forecast as the remaining variable, the event appears on track to fill the 91,613 seat arena. Betting activity increases as odds shift and counterfeit ticket rings are investigated by Rickard’s agents and authorities.
Meriden June 30 Russell Wells once posing as a wealthy oil magnate and four companions were arrested for defrauding the Winthrop hotel. Wells is wanted in Worcester Mass for bigamy and has a Providence R I police record. A Worcester warrant will be served while Wells serves a sentence in the New Haven county jail. His companions disappeared after the arrest.
Washington June 30 proper sources state President Harding has not chosen a successor to the late Chief Justice White. Officials say no nomination has been sent to the Senate and the president plans to wait until shortly before the Supreme Court reopens in October. Taft remains the anticipated choice.
Washington reports that Attorney General Daugherty instructed the New York district attorney to sue under anti trust laws against the Cement Manufacturers Protective Association, its officers and members. The group produces about 80 million barrels of cement annually, roughly 90 percent of U S output.
Waterbury June 30 The Connecticut company plans to replace private jitneys with its own after July 15 on routes to districts not served by the trolley Transfers will be used and the fare will remain 10 cents The firm has two planned routes and will keep details under wraps Until the Public Utilities Commission approves its jitney licenses the move signals a likely strong company presence in state transport policies with preference for routes covering two termini over individual operators
Washington June 30 The senate agricultural committee voted to report favorably the Norris bill creating a 100 million dollar government corporation to dispose of surplus American agricultural products in foreign markets. Senator Harrison of Mississippi opposed, seeking amendments to curb purchasing powers and trim agency taps.
Meriden hosts the fifty-first annual meeting with about 400 attendees in Meriden lodge. Venerable Master John O. Rowland presided as reports and elections were held. officers elected include Rowland, Stiallock, Hall, Sherwood, and Waldo among others. One hundred new members were added. the oldest Mason was Samuel G. Kingman, 91, of Corinthian lodge. The next meeting will be held in Bridgeport.
The public utilities commission held two hearings in the town hall about jitney routes. Fifteen Naugatuck Waterbury operators faced questions while Union City Naugatuck petitions, led by William Pettit, drew support from local residents. Two main applicants testified. supporters rose to endorse their bids. The hearing on the Naugatuck Waterbury line continued at press time with 14 jitney drivers questioned and sworn in.
New Haven June 30 The state suffered through a night of electrical storms and heavy rainfall causing washouts on highways under mining steam roads and trolley tracks and crippling tobacco and other crops. Weather officials report nearly two inches of rain with clearing likely tomorrow and worst damage around Winsted and southern Connecticut.
Lightning during last night's storm struck a flag pole near the home of Joseph Loudon in Norwalk. Mia Loudon was shocked, and her son David, asleep on the veranda, was unhurt. One of the flock was killed. others were injured but none furrowed toward the chicken coop.
Pasquale Romano Jitneur, held for trial in the superior court on a charge of assaulting a passenger Miss Laura Chapman Bridgeport, had his license suspended by order of Motor Vehicle Commissioner Stoecke today in Norwalk on June 30.
Firemen rescued several girls from the second story of the Stamford Rubber Supply Company on Shippan Avenue. Smoke from burning rubber filled the work rooms early this forenoon. Fire was extinguished with about 500 dollars in damage.
