Increasing cloudiness and humidity forecast for today with scattered showers or thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. The highest temperature should reach the lower 90s, with a low around 60 to 65 tonight. Saturday will be partly cloudy and cooler.
In the wake of a Wednesday explosion at the Syn synthetic Rubber Plant hundreds of borough residents surged toward the scene. Officials deplore the reckless crowding that hindered fire and medical crews and threaten stern action to prevent repeats.
A historic review of the Rosenberg trial notes immense public emotion and claims of injustice by supporters, while courts and the highest justices stuck to the verdict. It asserts Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were guilty of conspiring to pass atomic secrets to Russia and discusses the death penalty and political reaction.
Warden Charles Clark announced plans to split the borough into two voting districts per ward for the next election. A three-member commission would study the plan, with HB-1254 cited as authority. Connecticut Highway Commissioner G Albert Hill urged a Senate Public Works committee to approve federal support for tolled roads and bridges. He backed a Bush measure to finance toll facilities, saying a highway bridge is a section of highway across water. He cited a $375 million urgent need and a 20 year timeframe to complete the state’s toll expressway expansion.
Associate Supreme Court Justice Raymond E. Baldwin served as a substitute judge in Bridgeport on June 20 acting for Judge John T. Cullinan who missed the session due to an ulcerated tooth. It marked Baldwin’s first time presiding over a Superior Court, part of his unusual path from U S Senate appointment to the Supreme Court.

The School Building Committee meets Monday at 8 o clock in the Tuttle School to open bids for improvements to the Salem School. Chairman Raymond K. Foley presides. If accepted, the work will advance a $1 150 000 construction program approved by local vote. Bids are rejected for Hop Brook School and delays affect Prospect Street and Central Avenue projects.
Joseph Laniel, a 63 year old textile magnate and conservative, wins approval as France's new premier by the National Assembly after 37 days without a government. He pledges a minimal action program rooted in postwar orthodoxy and will represent France at the Bermuda Big Three meeting.
The House approved a bill to sell the Naugatuck Synthetic Plant to private industry now moves to the Senate. The Armed Services Committee reports the plant cost about 20 million dollars to build and has a maximum annual capacity of 22 000 long tons of rubber. Connecticut delegation mostly opposed sending the measure back to committee. Rep Patterson of Watertown not recorded. The U S S Rubber Co operating the plant for the Reconstruction Finance Corporation may bid, while officials study rubber markets to decide if purchase is sound. Local chamber urged sale to a New England producer to protect jobs and synthetic rubber output.
United Press reports that South Korean President Rhee met with Walter Robertson and described the talks as cordial and hopeful. Rhee praised Robertson for bringing good ideas while signaling openness to Panmunjom terms and possible compromises amid ongoing Korean War armistice discussions.
Mrs Olive Nelson Anderson 78 widow of Oscar Anderson of West Hartford former resident of Naugatuck and Waterbury died early this morning at New Britain General Hospital She was born March 16 1876 in Sweden and worked at Waterbury Manufacturing Company Chase Division until retirement She was a member of First Church of Christ Congregational West Hartford North Star Lodge Scandinavian Fraternity of America Ingehore Lodge Order of Vnou Waterbury Survivors include son-in-law William A Rosie sister Mrs Andrew Johnson granddaughter Shirley Rogie and several nieces and nephews Funeral services will be Monday at 2 pm at Alderton Funeral Home 70 Central Avenue Waterbury Burial Grove Cemetery.”

National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis has sent range and rocking beds, calling the outbreak epidemic in scope. A physician from Washington arrives to assist in the fight.
