Voters turnout was extremely light during today's referendum with a total of 86 ballots cast. At Central Avenue school 23 votes were recorded and at the Ward two polling sites low turnout continued across the town as residents weighed constitutional amendments and primary law changes.
Borough Court in Naugatuck continues the case of James Gambarcelli a New Haven school bus driver 82 charged with four motor vehicle violations including driving without a license and improper use of marker plates. Investigator Henry Morler Jr leads the probe as more details emerge.
The Chimica Company and the workers union reached a contract agreement. The master contract negotiated last spring will become effective July 1 with the Easy Tul Survival Plan in place. A meeting for ratification and supplementary details will be held Wednesday night at the specified location. The union committee was led by President Engle and included William Con Rhethy Don and other members. Company representatives were Wydg Bradford and several others. The agreement follows prior tentative deals and sets the framework for final action. Fred Strong, long-time head of Strong Manufacturing, died at Litchfield County Hospital. Services are scheduled for Wednesday.

Prospect Street land dispute in Waterbury faces possible out of court settlement as Waterbury Superior Court condemns land for the borough. The case, now handled by Attorney Henry Marler after the late Martin Culne, may not finish before summer recess and could go to the Supreme Court of Errors if unresolved. Property owners are Elizabeth Zwick and Wilhelmina Bennett. dispute includes a $5,250 bill by Atty. M Leonard Caine for his late father’s services. Court-ordered valuations were $22,250 vs sales totals of $155,000, amid talks of settlement with the Zwick and Bennett interests.

A powerful thunderstorm knocked out power across Prospect and surrounding areas, with Union City hardest hit. Lightning damaged a tree on Prospect Street and disrupted four wires, knocking out Baldwin Street circuit feeding Union City. repairs began at 6:30 p.m. and service fully restored by morning. The storm dropped 13 inches of rain and brought relief from heat, while beaches drew crowds and a firework display kit suffered losses.
President Truman plans to send Walter Robertson to Seoul to press South Korea’s President Rhee to accept an armistice, while UN officials led by General Clark seek cooperation. Rhee contemplates withdrawing forces. Clark warns truces hinge on Communist actions.
Former President Truman and his wife arrived in Washington after a two day drive from Independence. Truman plans an afternoon visit to the Truman Memorial Library Association, which is drafting plans for a library at Independence Missouri to house the Truman papers.
Robert Milici, 17, of New Haven, drowned yesterday at Lake Waramang while diving from a row boat with two companions. Lifeguards Kevin Nixon and Andrew Mountain Road aided the recovery from about 20 feet of water. Artificial respiration was attempted by Nixon and Dr. William Burke during transport to shore, but Milici was pronounced dead. Dr. John Simonds of Washington conducted the medical examination.
