Admission To VA Hospitals Explained

Veterans do not automatically qualify for VA hospital care. VA first treats eligible veterans needing care for service connected disabilities, then those with disability rated under duty while on active service admitted if beds are available for nonservice-connected conditions, and finally war veterans without service connected disabilities if they need care, certify inability to pay, and beds are available. Peacetime veterans are eligible only if discharged properly or receiving VA compensation.
