Miss Anna K. Lynch retires after 47 years in Naugatuck, Hop Brook and School Street schools. A party hosted by Hop Brook PTA and friends at the American Brass Country Club will honor her with gifts from the faculty and parents. Other attendees include Hop Brook staff and local residents. Births announced at St Mary’s Hospital include a son to Mr and Mrs Andrew McDermott.
Premier Mossadegh orders seizure of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company including all assets and Abadan refinery after Britain fails to meet Iran’s demand to hand over 75 percent of revenue since March 20, the nationalization date. Britain proposed a lump sum plus monthly payments. Iran rejected as contrary to nationalization law. Mossadegh’s move targets land producing a large share of world oil and air supply. American ambassador Grady urged caution but was ignored.
One hundred forty one graduates received diplomas and awards at Tuttle Grounds as Dr J Nelson uuy led the ceremony. Nearly 1 860 attendees filled the outdoor lawn with processional music, student performances, and speeches urging vision, courage, and responsibility for a challenging postwar world.
Coast Guard Lieutenant Alton Pinkham testified the Jack fishing cruiser disaster on June 11 did not involve unusually severe weather. He described 25 mph easterly winds, fair skies, and small craft warnings as rescuers found six bodies. Survivors recounted frantic choices as the vessel sank quickly with 11 lives lost.
The Rev Donald E Bartlett will give the invocation at Center School commencement exercises at St Michael's Lyceum at 745 pm. Twelve graduates are named with class president Donald Doiron delivering the welcome and class prophecy by Joan Tucker. Kenneth Upright chairs the board of education as diplomas are presented. Police Chief John J. Gormley of Beehbé Street was admitted last night to St Marys hospital. He is resting comfortably and under observation for treatment of his left leg. Dr William Finkelstein of Waterbury stated the chief is in hospital for observation and treatment.
Warden George S Fellows states the 1931-52 budget and the increase in borough tax rates were set by the Republican administration. He says Democrats are not responsible for the higher tax bills now going out. The tax rate rose by one and a half mills to 21.12 mills, with District One at 27.5 mills and District Two at five mills, approved May 14 after the May 7 election.
Eastern Malleable Tran Co stockholders approved increasing capital stock from 2 million to 4 million and issuing additional shares. Directors may issue unissued shares and transfer 493 625 from capital surplus to capital account by converting into 19 721 additional shares.
Hospital bulletins report Thomas Doody and Ralph Maietta as medical patients at St Mary's Hospital with addresses 319 New Geven Road and 66 Bridge Street respectively. Mrs Mary Rakoleski of 290 High Street is listed with fair condition after an auto accident in Beacon Falls, undergoing treatment for head injuries. UPI reports 17-year-old Thomas H Newman of Old Saybrook was killed in action in Korea, with the telegram dated June 23 sent to his parents.

They urge continued efforts to set a program for a potential main talks. Washington seeks reconsideration on oil dispute with Britain. Acheson warns situation is critical. The Portuguese Club will hold a special meeting on Saturday June 23 at 7 20 p m in Rubber Avenue club rooms presided by Joseph Dias to arrange the state wide Portuguese Day in Linden Park on July 29 A field day meeting of Connecticut Portuguese Associated clubs will be present with seven state clubs and a soccer game between Bridgeport and Danbury teams planned for July 29.
Rep Adam Mengacci was stricken with pneumonia poisoning in Washington D C while handling an immigration case. He is a patient at Bethesda Navy hospital under arrangements by Rep James Patterson. Mrs Mengacci said he phoned home and doctors want him to stay a day or two longer before returning to Naugatuck.
Hartford June 20 UP New demands for a 40 hour week from the Connecticut State Employes Association. A resolution to Governor Lodge urges administrative action to establish a 40 hour week for institutional and highway workers starting July 1 with a 10 percent wage increase for all state workers. Bernard H McCuskey says members are upset by the Legislature’s failure to enact the measure. They warn of potential unrest if demands are not met. Walter Reuther hospitalized in Detroit for a general checkup after chest pain earlier linked to a White House meeting.
New York reports that a federal grand jury indicted 21 Communist party officials on conspiring to overthrow the government by force. FBI agents arrested 17 Reds early today, with four more sought. Arrestees include Simon Gerson and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn. Washington says additional subversives will be jailed as the crackdown continues.
Monty Woolley, staying at Hotel Biton during his Yale class reunion in New Haven, recalls leading the 1916 Naugaatuck Shakespeare staging and teaching drama at Yale for over a decade. He rebuts the Hollywood red scare, predicts TV will rely on filmed shows, and urges would be actors to gain stage experience rather than attend drama schools.
Final plans for opening the summer playgrounds in the borough Monday will be discussed tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock in the town hall by the board of park commissioners.
