A wartime drive in Korea and civilian health needs spur a national blood program. Whole blood and derivatives are key to saving lives in battle and in disasters, with gamma globulin helping polio paralysis outcomes. Citizens are urged to donate blood quarterly, starting with an appointment in Naugatuck.
John Donahue on trial for killing a state policeman slugged Deputy Sheriff George Guidera while being transported to Superior Court. Guidera, struck over the left eye, subdued Donahue and continued to the courthouse. Both officers were unarmed. Donahue had hidden a metal object in his coat. Guidera received emergency treatment. condition not serious.
A British sourced report says the Soviets dropped claims to Turkish frontier areas and refused military bases along the Dare dunellen Strait. The note notes a major bid for improved ties between Hussia and Turkey.
The Rev. Francis Y. Kerwan named assistant at St. Francis Church by Bishop Henry J. O'Brien. Kerwan, Waterbury native, ordained in 1943, served at St. Mary's Portland and as army chaplain before returning to parish work. His appointment comes as other priest moves are announced in the Catholic Transcript.
The Salem School Board discussed delays in the renovation project with a plan to send a letter to the Building Committee stating only hosting and lighting work should be attempted this year. Superintendent Chittenden warned work during school would endanger students and questioned state approval timing, while criticism from Commissioner Connolly resurfaced. The board voted to forward the letter and consider high school planning steps and polling-place use for the June referendum.
The Naugatuck High School seniors celebrated Class Day on Turtle Lawn led by Miss Louise Grainger. Highlights included the ivy planting, baton handoff from Joan Fowler to Kevin Daly, and the farewell by Class President Fowler.
Rizzuti appears favored for the two year welfare superintendent role with a June Welfare Board meeting expected to confirm the appointment. Rep J Rudolph Anderson remains a strong backer in some city circles while a darkhorse option is also anticipated. Edward Fitzgerald is sworn in as Republican member alongside veteran Andrew Bentley, a Democrat. The session begins at 8 pm at the Town Hall office of Warden Charles Clarte.
In Rome the Monarchist party appears to hold the fate of Premier Alcide De Gasperi's coalition as the government returns without a clear majority. De Gasperi resists offering cabinet seats to the Monarchists despite their 40 parliamentary seats.
At the town hall meeting the Finance Board elected Eric Gabrielson as chairman and George Kennedy as vice chairman. The two Republicans and Democrats in the group sworn in included several other officials led by Controller Charles Daly who noted conflicts between borough clerk and controller duties.

Dr Cornelius Van Viandren of 618 Rubber Avenue reported comfortable today at Waterbury Hospital as surgical patient. Henry Krzykowski of Homestead Avenue is a surgical patient at St Marys Hospital. Births McCann a daughter to Mr and Mrs Marehall McCann of Byam Road June 7 at St Marys Hospital Frances Kimball is the mother. Paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Horace McCann Scott Street. Maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Charles Kimball Scott Street.
