A Worcester area tornado tore through Holden and Worcester Massachusetts, lifting a two week old from Ruth Oslund's arms before the child was lost in rubble. The storm, blamed for multiple deaths and widespread destruction, prompted state police to offer aid though Worcester reported no immediate need. The disaster revived memories of a 87 year old Windsor tornado and earlier town damages in Wallingford and East Hampton.
United Press reports a deadly tornado outbreak across WorcesterMass and surrounding towns. The toll reached at least 80 dead with hundreds injured and thousands homeless as a 25mile destruction corridor from Petersham to Southboro devastated communities. Gov Christian Herter declared the disaster area eligible for state relief funds as Red Cross and highway crews mobilized to aid shelters and medical needs.
The Knights of Columbus held an officers meeting at the K of C rooms on Church Street. Nine officers were announced: Grand Knight Alfred Pratesi, Deputy Grand Knight Richard Whitehi, Chancellor Danald Cowan, Recording Secretary John Joyce, Treasurer Joseph Biernicki, Advocate John Healey, Warden Fred Ruggeri, Outside Guard Thomas Dowling, and Trustees George Kennedy John Viliger son Lewis Russo. Installation planned for the first September meeting. Family outings are planned for around July 28.
Negotiations between Local 45 United Rubber Workers CIO and the Naugatuck Footwear Plant U S Rubber Co continued with no report of progress. A 15 day strike notice expires at 4 p m June 18.
Hirst resigns as district school superintendent for rural Prospect Bethlehem Watcott and Woodbury district effective June 30. He cites personal and professional reasons after completing a doctorate at Columbia University. Borough police board names Suchenski chairman and Donahue secretary. A special session June 18 will name two new regular policemen. Birth notices listed Hicock and Scullin families.
A Union City Community Club special meeting is set for Tuesday night at the Polish Association Club to unveil plans for a new highway through Union City. President Donald Cowan aims to have a Chamber of Commerce Highway Committee official present to explain the program. All interested residents are invited to attend.
Thirty three diplomas will be awarded to the Center School graduating class at exercises Monday night in St Michael's Lyceum. Principal Myra John Donahee notes the program starts at 7 45 with the processional. The invoca tion will be given by Rev Andrew Solundt. A hymn will be sung by the class. Class president Robert Annelli will deliver the address of welcome. Diplomas will be presented by Kenneth Upright. The graduates include Sylvia Madeline Martin and John Almond Shutney among others.
Hospital Babietins Mrs Arnold Levine of Carroll Street is recovering well at St Mary's Hospital after surgery this morning. Chester Jankowski of Elmwood Street remains a surgical patient at St Mary's. Frank Green postmaster of Naugatuck rested comfortably last night and is described in good condition at St Mary's. Nordhill Naugen of North Main Street, recently operated on at Whrterbury Hospital, was reported in fair condition today.
Local residents report anxious hours as Worcester area victims seek relatives after a Massachusetts tornado. Three people in Worcester area sought contact through Red Cross while Western Union services struggled. Homes, including the Sutherland and Wilson houses near Assumption College, suffered damage with no serious injuries reported.
