Joseph G. Taybkwleh Jr chairman of the U S C campaign committee in Nangabuek announced today the captains, net renters and team workers for sections B and G. Arthur Pager is captain of Group B with Lieut Arthur Pearson and a roster of lieutenants and workers listed.
A heavy bomber crash near Hamilton Field, three miles northwest, killed fourteen people including seven army enlisted men, five civilians, and two status-undetermined individuals. Crew members were civilians and the incident prompts ongoing investigations by field authorities. A separate WPB report notes a new food requirements committee formed by Secretary Wieckard, under Production Chief Nelson, to oversee civilian and military food production and allocation decisions.
Washington reports an important conference between President Roosevelt and top government leaders on national gasoline rationing concluded today. A White House statement on the situation is expected in a matter of days.
Washington reports navy action against two merchant ships, a medium Norwegian and a Dutch vessel, torpedoed and shelled by submarines. Survivors from both ships have been landed at an east coast port.
The June 5 dispatch says the largest British convoy ever to reach India has landed thousands of troops and large quantities of equipment including American tanks and planes to bolster defense against any Japanese attack. Also reported Hitler pressuring Italy and Finland to back a major offensive against Russia and an attempt to sever the Murmansk Lenin grad railroad.
Washington June 5 Senate conferees on the military pay bill proposed a compromise carrying 46 dollars a month for privates and apprentice seamen at the minimum base pay. House conferees took the proposal under advisement.
Washington June 5 UP The Congress of Industrial Organizations took the first step toward expulsion declaring the United Mine Workers delinquent for perveapite tax payments to the CLO.
President Roosevelt, reading a prepared statement, warns that Japan has used poisonous gases in China. He says the United States will retaliate in kind and meet such inhuman acts with full measure. Continued on Page Two.
An explosion at the Elwood Ordnance plant wrecked a shell loading building, killing at least 24 workers and injuring many more. Officials say the plant, valued at 30 million dollars and spanning 28 square miles, remained in operation as rescue efforts continued. Investigators from the Army and FBI pursued an inquiry into the blast’s cause amid reports of a preceding smaller shock.

The Naugalick Savings Bank is credited with one application for 1000 for Savings Bank Life Insurance approved during January 2 to May 31, 1942. John P. Royston, general manager, notes 442300 in connected life insurance applications and 603100 in force across seven issuing banks. Most applicants are from low income groups. Medical Director Dr. B Baylis Earle approved 624700 and postponed 15000 partial deductions.
Ezio Pina, leading basso of the Metropolitan Opera, was released from Island after 47 days as an enemy alien. Italian-American Pini and Mali were arrested March 12 and Pina released May 28 by the board honoring a recent decision.
In Devens Massachusetts on June 5 a local item reports girls are urged to brush up on army slang. The note mentions James Moo inviting a girl from Colorado Springs to write a dove letter and sending a sugar voucher. the piece reflects social chatter around wartime slang and correspondence.
The Boy Scouts of America Troop 2 met last evening with DRA exercises and advancement tests. Three second class scouts will be advanced and receive merit badges at today’s ceremony. The meeting closed with an inspirational song led by the scoutmaster.
Chester P. Rusazy, 20, of Union City, joins the United States Marine Corps at the Parris Island recruit depot. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Chester Buzzy of Union City. A Naugiuluck High School alumnus, he was employed by Seymour Manufacturing before enlisting and hopes to enter the air branch after training.
Harold Be Ghittenden, superintendent of schools in Naugatuck, told the board that government use of school property increases costs to the Beebe street Beebe district. He noted the district is reimbursed $50 monthly for Beebe street space, but Nebual expenses rose to 805.28. He said draft board initially used one room, now multiple rooms are used for offices and operations.
Constance Carpenter, 46 year old Springfield girl, was found alive in a Belchertown swamp after five days missing during a turkey hill outing. She was hospitalized in serious condition with pneumonia, having survived on leaves and swamp water. A five day search by 400 possemen, state police, and army planes from Westover aided the rescue.
Rev John F McPeague was named assistant pastor for St Marys Church in Union City yesterday by Bishop Maurice F McAuliffe. He will arrive in Naligatuck to begin duties tomorrow noon. He previously served as assistant pastor at St Marys Church in New Britain.

Fall River Mass June 5 UP Alfred A Bligh former convict and private detective arrested in Reno will be returned home and arraigned Tuesday in a theft case involving 1920 funds from the Dighton dog track Police said Bligh vanished May 18 after the disappearance of the money and was captured by Sergeant Joseph L Andrews Andrews trailed a woman connected to Bligh to the West hoping to locate him The woman Mrs Jiffie Mae Beach was arrested on a Fall River warrant for morals violation She disappeared from Fall River hours before Bligh and his brother who were already indicted in connection with the theft took the money from the dog track
Boston June 5 The U P State OPA administrator Henry Parkman warned motorists summoned to explain how they obtained high unit gasoline rationing cards that they must comply with board instructions or lose future purchase rights An amendment to prior rules allows depriving all gasoline rations for failure to appear after due notice or surrender of a card Local boards gain broad authority and extreme care is urged Boston board reports many X card holders surrendering unlimited rations voluntarily
United Press dispatch notes a sudden shift in Japanese strategy as fierce fighting continues on the China front and in the Pacific. U S forces pursue an enemy fleet toward Pearl Harbor and Midway after Japanese attacks damaged a battleship and an aircraft carrier, with further vessels reportedly hit.
Hartford Republican town committee adopts a resolution urging former Gov. Raymond B. Baldwin to seek reelection for the welfare of the state and security of the people. It calls for steps to urge his candidacy and public declaration of availability and willingness to lead the party to victory this fall.
Kenneth Wallace and Alvin Brewer of Small Point netted 16 000 bushels of fish near Boothbay Harbor earning about 1500 dollars in a few hours. Sea and Shore Commissioner Art Greenleaf said the catch came after Wallace sighted fish schools and alerted Brewer to bring nets. The fish were valued at roughly 90 cents per bushel.
