Doctor Swett Lived Two Years Among Marquesan Cannibals
Dr. Charles F. Swett of Maine died at 64 in Auburn after a remarkable two year sojourn with Marquesan cannibals. He was shipwrecked or stranded while ill in the Pacific, recovered, befriended the island chief, and was later kidnapped by a trading ship captain who forced him aboard as natives pursued. The wind shifted, the ship escaped, and Swett survived.
