London cabling reports General White’s dispatch from Frere Camp detailing an attack on Caesare Camp and Wagon Hill. The entrenchments were taken and retaken three times, with heavy enemy losses and the troops praised for discipline as the crisis in South Africa deepened.
In Suffield on January 8 a group of tobacco growers faced refusals from one or two buyers who would not take crops they had previously contracted for. They demanded cash payment and stood by no late down payment forfeits. Two thirds of local tobacco was sold standing in the field last season, harming sale value though not crop quality.
Manila dispatches report preliminary reconnoissances by Colonel Birkhimer with Twenty-eighth Volunteers at Nevada and Major Taggart at Perez Das Marinas. In San Francisco a Chinese carpenter Wong Yuen was fatally shot in his shop amid a Highbinder feud. Three assailants identified as Suey Sting Highbinders opened fire as he tried to hide in a closet, escaping after the killing. Wong belonged to the Ho Sing society.
Christmas cards from Daniel Tallon Lord Mayor of Dublin and John E Redmond M P. were received by friends of the two leaders in New Haven. The cards feature photos of the Mansion House with the Irish and American flags crossed over clasped hands and a message of hearty Christmas greetings.
An unidentified man aged about 60 to 65 died around 1 am in the Plainville town building after being found unconscious hours earlier while seeking lodging. He wore several coats, had a Mission Book Manual of Instruction and Prayers, Roman Catholic items, and was to be cared for by Undertaker Fox for burial.
About 7 last evening a boy led police to 510 Orchard Street where Andrew Bills, colored man, allegedly tried to slash his wife with a knife. Patrolman Recor and Detective Frey restrained him. Bills was arrested on breach of peace. The boy’s alarm likely saved the family.
In Tidikeli district on December 22, about 1200 Insular natives attacked the Flamant French scientific expedition. French forces aided by Spahis repulsed the assault, 50 natives killed and 64 captured. Insalara subsequently submitted.
Lieutenant Gilmore of the Yorktown, captured near Baler, arrived in Manila after months in rebel hands. He and eight companions, half starved, were rescued December 18 on the Abulut river. They were moved through Benguet and Lepanto, with a perilous paddle by rafts, while American forces pressed the pursuit.
In Narberth Pennsylvania a suburb of Philadelphia residents decide to form a twenty member armed vigilance committee to patrol streets nightly. Strangers unable to justify themselves will be handcuffed and tied to a tree until morning before being brought before justices of the peace. Robberies have been frequent along Pennsylvania railroad towns this winter.
Rev Dr Edward McGlynn rector of St Marys Church Newburgh died at 633 PM after a threefold illness Brights disease leg abscess and heart failure He had asked last rites Thanksgiving day and remained concerned for parishioners His death leaves him a poor man despite benefactions and a memorial fund will be raised. Archbishop Corrigan arrived in Newburgh to comfort the parishioners and a funeral plan delayed by the clerical meeting and debt liquidations.
A visiting card bearing the name William T. Morgan from Winona Minnesota accompanied a man who swindled Norwalk merchants out of several hundred dollars. He paid with self named checks drawn on various persons, obtained goods, and leased a costly horse at Union Park. Checks later protested. Morgan is reportedly not at home as authorities pursue.
A daring burglary at Vulcan Iron Works in New Britain on Saturday evening absconded with upwards of 300 dollars. The thief used a known key and safe combination, reclosed the door, and left undetected. Night Watchman McCarthy discovered the open safe and police were alerted as investigators questioned key holders.
Chicago January 8 George A Cullen immigration agent says Elder Dempster plans to land 55000 Finns in the United States and Canada this summer but they are not coming to replace American railroad workers. He notes Finns emigrating to farm and escape Russian rule and that contract labor regulations would block the plan. Roland Reed in New York is reported critically ill at St Luke's hospital after days of illness.
