Naugatuck Welfare Board eyes a land inspection on borough property along Millville Avenue and Hond Joy Street. Officials see potential for public sale building lots with sewer, electricity, and gas access, noting surface water drainage and a new recreation area at the top of Millville Avenue near the Roythwich homestead.

Walter J. Tamulonis 54 of Pond Hill died after a short illness. A Lithuania native, he lived in Naugatuck 35 years and worked at Eastern Malleable Iron Co. for 35 years. Survived by wife Anna and seven grandchildren, he leaves daughters Mrs Edward Sieridulis and Mrs Anthony Johnson, sons Joseph, Albert, and Anthony. Funeral Wednesday at Buckmiller Funeral Home and St Francis Church. Burial St James Cemetery.
Butterfield Inc completes a $100,000 sale of Brockway Naugatuck Co holdings on Rubber Avenue to the Butterfield firm. The deal includes three buildings a warehouse shed and related property stretching to Long Meadow Brook. Harris Whittemore Jr president of Brockway Naugatuck Co and Lewis Engineering Co official states Lewis Engineering will lease back the buildings. Butterfield started operations in 1938 and currently employs about 120 people.
More than 400 adults and youngsters packed St Francis Club’s semi formal dance reopening Columbus Hall. Snowstorm earlier day eased and Al Gentile's orchestra played over five hours. President Bernard L Sullivan and Ernest Allen led planning, with kids dancing 7 to 8 and adults 9 to 14.
The Naugatuck Community Ambulance was used 11 times over the past two days to transport Incas residents to area hospitals. The high call volume shows many residents rely on ambulance service beyond minor incidents.
Marcelonis Joseph G. 29 of 72 Ward street now in Wyoming Ohio near Cincinnati remains in critical condition at Geeval hospital Cincinnati with six bullet wounds to abdomen and legs. Accuser Richard C. Hill 43 of Wyoming claims self defense after a quarrel at Hill home following a cafe party. Marcelonis says no argument occurred. Family reports his condition somewhat improved but still danger list. A former U S Army Air Force sergeant and decorated veteran with Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal seven Clusters and four battle stars, he served two overseas tours and four years in service. Officials announced the regular session of the Warden and Burgesses postponed from New Year’s Night to later in the week. Warden Lay J. Brophy said many members cannot attend on one date. Vacancies in the Naugatuck police department due to resignations and retirement were to be discussed, with possible immediate action to fill Sergeant Farrar and Patrolman Kelly roles. Names mentioned for sergeant’s post included James Fenton George Smith and Raymond Carigon. A separate note reports that transportation strikes in 18 northeastern states threaten service. 1,000 Pennsylvanian and Central Greyhound Lines workers will resume by Sunday under a tentative agreement and the dispute is to be reviewed by government fact-finders.
Dr Waltee I Bakter reports a fifth diphtheria case in Naugtuck with Lorraine O Rourke, a 9 year old girl, under Dr Edwin Curran care. The child, resident at 490 Worth Main, attends Raxped Street School, remains quarantined due to travel conditions, and is not yet at New Haven General Hospital. Dr Baker urges vaccination and anti toxin for children under six, stressing rapid inoculation and family physician checkups.
Chiang Kai Shek calls for a truce with the Chinese Communists and urges both sides to appoint representatives to meet with General Marshall, the American envoy to China, to work out terms to cease fighting and restore railway communications. He also suggests observers from the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Council to monitor military and transportation matters in dispute.
Anthony Sinkawich aged 61 of 194 Maple Street died last night in Watarlury hospital after a brief illness. Born in Lithuania, he lived in Naugatuck 34 years and worked in the maintenance department at U S Rubber Co. Survived by wife Mrs Anon Sinkawiech and a daughter Mrs Salvatore Mancelni, Waterbury, with nieces and a nephew. funeral Wednesday at 10 a m from Buckmiller Funeral Home Park Place to St Frances Church Mass of Requiem at 10:30 Burial in St James Cemetery. Visitation tonight 7 to 9 p m and Tuesday 2 to 10 p m.
Six regular policemen are on the sick list at local police headquarters. Named are Chief John J. Gorm Toy and Sergeant Richard Osiron, Patrolmen Martin Garrick Joseph Kenney George Smith and George Hogi. Supervisors cover shifts with extra officers as needed due to the epidemic of colds and flu.
