Two well known Boot Room employees helped lead a successful United States Rubber Co party held recently at the Top Streets Club. Over 100 attendees enjoyed the department’s holiday event with Rocco Mariano in charge of catering and praise for the effort among Villions divisions.
The general secretary of the Southington M C A has accepted the post of general secretary of the Nangatuck MCC A and will assume duties in February. Mr. Brown, a graduate of the M C A College at Chicago, Illinois, brings over 16 years of experience in physical direction and administrative work across Newburyport Massa chusetts Stamford and Southington.
The Athens archbishop’s secretary says King George of Greece has appointed Ras as regent, as the archbishop nears swearing in while recovering from a blood transfusion. Tokyo reports a large American convoy toward Mindoro with Japan claiming seventeen ships sunk or damaged, a claim Palestine doubtful.
A local group of children has been sliding down a steep bank between Fairview avenue and Meadow street creating a danger zone near the playground gate. Special to The News reports Donald F. Sears of Naugatuck Conn has reported to RAF Redistribution Station No 1 in Atlantic City N J after seven months of service in the European theater. Sears served as a radio operator on a Flying Fortress and flew 35 combat missions. He wears the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf clusters and awaits his next assignment after leaving the redistribution station.
Parochial schools resume Tuesday January 2 at St Francs and St Hedwigs with students back after Christmas recess. Public schools including the high school will resume Monday January 1 after the holiday break, though officials deny rumors of an earlier reopening and remind students they still have one more week of vacation.
The Selective Service Board W4-A will not meet on Monday. The regular weekly meeting will be held on Wednesday next week instead. The board office will be closed on New Year’s Day.
Exalted Ruler Edgar Leach announces February first meeting designated as Past Exalted Rulers Night. Lodge officers and chairs will be occupied by past rulers including Jeremiah Calejahen Jr and Bernard Lindahl with committee chair Paul Bushmiller assisting.
Letters to Mr and Mrs Sydney Baylis from their son George a United States Marine Corps reveal he recently met Richard A Payne another Ideal youth and member of the 6th Marine Division Payne was slated for a furlough home but plans were canceled and he does not know when he will get a vacation back to the states Baylis was a Naugatuck High School senior at enlistment and has seen much action in the Pacific Payne also has served in the Pacific region A Christmas card bearing a 6th Marine Division design was received by the Baylis family
United Press reports a major clash between General George Patton and Marshal Von Rundstedt in Belgium as Patton’s Third Army expands a wedge into the Nazi pocket. About 100,000 American troops and hundreds of tanks push to within 32 miles of other U S forces, threatening a decisive winter blow and prompting possible northern counterstrike by the German commander.
Borough stores will close Monday January 1 for New Year’s Day. Several local factories will shut but keep staff to take inventory. U S Rubber, Naugatuck Chemical and Synthetic plants, Risden, Naugatuck Glass, and Naugatuck Mfg all operate full time. Library and municipal offices close. THE NEWS not published.
